I began writing professionally over 40 years ago, when I started work for a traditional English weekly newspaper. The five journalists at the Middleton Guardian sat round a table in the middle of a room no more than 15 metres square. All of life flowed across that table. My first assignment was the Founder’s Day Service for a posh girls’ school in the town. I was 16 years old and surrounded by about 1,000 girls. This is a tough life, I thought, but someone’s got to do it.I’ve lived in over 30 houses in my short life on earth. And I’ve had so many jobs, inside and outisde of journalism, that I’ve lost count. Some of them I’ve been happy to forget. But I’ve always kept coming back to journalism in some form or other, whether its writing, editing, design, photography or spin doctoring.I’ve tried to be serious about making money, but discovered I’m more interested in experiencing life in all its fullness. LIfe’s too important to waste with work that has no meaning. You can get in touch with me at jedstone@me.com most of the time

Chapter 2: Introduction
Speaking in public is not the unusual event it used to be for the most people, whether you define ‘public’ as ten people or ten thousand. Even if you are not often asked to address large audiences, you will find presentations, both formal and informal, becoming an increasingly regular feature of being a manager, or a professional.
The ability to speak with authority and confidence is a key measure of a manager’s ability to perform well in his or her role. Communicating well is the mark of a professional.
Reports of research work; proposals for organisational changes; union meetings; seminars and conferences; presentations of products to customers or advertising campaigns to clients all demand expertise in this vital area of communication skills.
If you find yourself faced with the challenge of making a presentation, we can assume that you will know your subject. What you may lack, however, are some of the communicative techniques by which you can put your ideas across with maximum impact.
Now, while it may be true that the ability to speak well is a gift bestowed upon few fortunate individuals, we can reassure ourselves that it is also a skill that be developed by all managers and that the more we present, the more confident and accomplished we become.
In this book we shall consider the techniques and skills that will enable you perform well in any formal presentation. We look at the best ways to prepare your presentation, how to deliver it effectively, and how to deal with the audience’s response.
Chapter 3: What is a Presentation?
It is important to establish at the outset what we mean by the term presentation in order to distinguish it from those other activities that make different demands upon your communication skills. For the purposes of our discussion, we may define a presentation as: an opportunity to put across to a specific audience new information and ideas in an attractive, interesting and persuasive way, often with the aid of audio/visual supporting material.
Presenting can therefore be distinguished from the activities of teaching or training, which have clearly defined and measurable educational or vocational outcomes, and which are usually characterised by a high level of participation throughout. In a presentation, by contrast, communication is initially one-way, and it does not become a participative exercise until questions are invited.
A presentation may simply (though rarely) be a transmission of information. You may, for example, be reporting the results of a survey
