    About the Author

    Chapter 1

Applause thundered through the rink as Becca landed with ease after her final triple-Lutz, triple-toe and sped toward the opposite end of the rink with the wind blowing her long silky blond hair behind her. Her cheeks were rosy from the exertion, but the smile on her face told not only the audience but the judges as well, that she had done her best and was happy with her performance.

The crowd was on their feet when the music ended and Becca flung her long hair behind her and skated gracefully toward the kiss and cry booth, throwing kisses at the audience as she skated. The audience loved her; they tossed long stemmed roses out onto the ice. She gathered them as she skated.

While we waited for the judges to calculate Becca's score, Hector leaned over and asked, Why didn't you ever take up skating, Colin? Your sister's the best. Surely it runs in the family.

I chuckled. It doesn't though. Everyone is into sports but me. Becca loves to skate. Julian, here, likes to play football, I said, gesturing to my brother who sat next to me.

And if I remember correctly, your dad plays on his works' baseball team and your mom's on the church volleyball team, Hector said.

Yes, that's true. Oh, here's the scores. It was with great pride swelling in my chest that they announced that my sister, two years my senior, had won the gold medal in the American Skating Championships.

This means that next year she'll go on to World, I yelled over the cheers of the crowd as I hugged Hector.

Is there any way we can go down there and congratulate her?

Not right now. Security is too tight. They wouldn’t even let me in by myself. We'll meet them at my parents' house. Come on; let's get outta here before we're stuck with the traffic.

I'm glad that your parents are with her down there.

Yeah. Me too. They wouldn't even let Julian and Marsha in, either, and they're married. So don't feel bad.

Hugging my brother, who was four years older than me, I said, We're going to Mom and Dad's. There's no reason to stick around here.

    Good idea, Julian agreed.

At least we got tickets free, Hector said as we headed toward the exit.

I grinned but didn't say anything. Hector and I had been friends for a few months and it never ceased to amaze me that the only things I could ever get him to do had to be free or he wouldn't go with me. The worst part was he worked in the construction business and made more money than me. But I held my ground and made sure that I never paid his way to anything that did cost us to get in; although that generally meant that I would go alone.

Colin, wait up! Julian's deep voice boomed as Hector and I stepped outside.

I turned to look at my older brother. Although he had always resembled Dad, with his curly dark brown hair and blue eyes, I had recently noticed that the older Julian got, the more he looked like Dad. Julian had been married to Marsha for almost a year. I was happy for him when he found her. They seemed to belong together. She was next to him, only an inch shorter than his five feet nine inches. Her long black hair shimmered in the lights of the skating arena's foyer as they rushed up to us.

Would you mind stopping by the store and picking up some champagne? Julian asked.

Mom and Dad did everything for the party already, remember? I asked as my cellphone rang.

Hello? I answered it before Julian could reply.

    Hi, Colin, where are you?

We're up front, Mom, I said as the mob started coming out the doors. Julian, Marsha, Hector and I are going to meet you at your house.

Hector grabbed me by the arm and led me toward his car before the mob reached us. Julian and Marsha were at our side.

Oh, good. I'm glad that you haven't left yet. Plans have changed, dear, she said. We're meeting at the Sheraton Plaza for a reception.

But you've already got everything ready at home, I protested.

I know. But the press is all over us down here and Holly just told me they were set up in the Green Room at the Sheraton. Holly said that there would be a press conference at the hotel. You all run on over there and we'll meet you there in about half an hour.

Okay. Be careful, Mom and tell Becca that we're proud of her.

    I will, dear. Thank you.

Sighing, I hung up the phone as we reached Hector's shiny black Monte Carlo Landau.

After relaying Mom's message to the others, I said, We'll meet you there, Jul.

Okay, he replied. We'd better hurry before everyone gets to their cars and the exit's jam-packed. Luckily, Julian had found a place close to us, so, after he opened the door to his gray Honda Accord for his wife, he hopped in and drove off.

I wasn't surprised that Hector had gotten in on the driver's side and unlocked the electronic door for me. I wondered if he were to ever get a girlfriend if he'd open the door for her.

Somehow, we managed to get out of the parking lot of the arena before everyone else got to their cars. I hope everyone doesn't head for the Sheraton, Hector said, following Julian out of the parking lot.

Several of these people are here from out of town, so they might be staying there.

At least they'll all be settled by the time we get out.

Reporters and television crews already packed the lobby when we entered the plush hotel. A large information board welcomed the skaters to town, and it was obvious the reporters were ready to pounce on the skaters when they arrived. It was then that I realized the reception was for not only Becca, but also the Silver and Bronze winners as well. The reception Mom and Dad had planned at home was only for Becca, whether she won a medal or not, didn't matter. It was the fact that she had made it to the championships that we'd have celebrated had she not won, but we were thankful that we were celebrating the win of the Gold.

    As I turned towards the
