Stacy waited nervously in the private waiting room, her signature still slightly wet at the bottom of the contract. She suppressed the urge to fidget, still not sure exactly what she had gotten herself into.

Take it easy, said the older woman with her. Brendan will buzz us when they leave Mr. Smith’s office.

Thanks, she said. But all the same…

I understand, she said with a pat on Stacy’s knee. Let’s go over his file again, just to get your mind off of things.

Stacy took a deep breath. Okay. William Anderson, age 49, and divorced for three years after 25 years of marriage. she recited from memory while the woman looked at a computer screen and nodded. One son, 18, and one daughter 23. My age, she thought. Made his money from commercial maritime navigational instruments along with computer stocks and timing of the market that caused an FTC investigation in 2002. Cleared of wrongdoing, he recently timed the market again and liquidated most of his portfolio before everything tanked and is now worth an estimated $200 million.

Good, the woman said. That’s your MBA talking; what about his psyche?
