    Chapter One

Sebeth Birch looked up from the pile of documents on her desk as her associate Kim Yarding entered the room.

How do I look? Kim asked, doing a little pivot for her friend to get a full view.

Sebeth looked at her from head to toe before answering, a grin already creeping on her face. You look like a real lady. Your dad will be very proud.

Kim’s face screwed up, as expected. Ugh! I thought so too. He’s going to think that his rebellious daughter has finally grown wise.

Sebeth laughed, asking, And what’s so wrong in that?

    Seriously?

Sebeth grinned, knowing perfectly well just how cheeky Kim was. Kim’s dad was Captain of the local police and had always wanted her to follow his trace in law and order. Too bad for him his daughter had always been more than a handful and still was.

Sebeth had met Tom Yarding several times over the years Kim and she had been working together and she liked the man despite his old-fashioned ways. He reminded her of the past generation of gentlemen; strict but fair, with a black and white perception of law and so protective of those around him.

It’s his birthday party Kim. Just play tamed for once. Just tell yourself it’ll be his gift.

Kim raised an eyebrow, exclaiming And you’re the one telling me that? I mean look at you Miss Birch; talented surgeon of thirty-two who is so workaholic she is still at office on a Friday night and only to be followed by a drive to the bar downtown for another one-night stand! Tame up yourself girl!

They had been friends for so long that Sebeth could easily read the love in even the most biting of Kim’s comments. Grinning, Sebeth proceeded to offer something that she believed might ease her associate’s mind.

What about if I lend you my car?

Kim’s blue eyes sparkled as she turned the idea over in her head. Lady in appearance but with a ranger truck? Yeah, that could do it!

Check your facts! It’s a Range Rover, a smart and practical vehicle for the modern adventurous women.

Adventurous my ass. You go hiking just to be able to watch cute guys from beneath!

Sebeth laughed as an answer and threw her keys in Kim’s waiting hand.

Would you mind lending it to me for the whole weekend? There’s the party of tonight then he will be making a barbecue tomorrow and on Sunday I’m pretty sure he’ll invite everyone from church to come home for tea. Oh and then our yearly ritual of going to his parents’ tomb in Westminster on this anniversary Monday morning… Exciting stuff as you can hear.

You’re a good daughter Kim. I hope you know that. And sure, keep the car till Monday.

Kim made a face but Sebeth knew she appreciated the comment.

A few minutes later Kim’s blond head bobbed with amusement as she delicately pushed her BMW keys in Sebeth’s pants’ pockets and waved to her cheerfully on her way out, calling out a Have fun at the bar! before disappearing in the borrowed car.

Sebeth was still grinning when she heard her car leaving the parking lot outside. Kimberley Yarding and she had started as interns at the same hospital and met again by coincidence a few years ago. They had always got along very well and when they reconnected, the idea of opening a medical practice together had seemed an obvious decision to both of them. It had been three years already and things were going really well for their practice.

Kim didn’t know it but Sebeth had not gone to the downtown bar for months. It just wasn’t fun anymore. After too many of them, even the best one-night stands left her feeling unstimulated. It felt mechanical, shallow and, quite frankly, disappointing. In truth, she was staying late because she really did have paperwork to finish. She was going to spend the weekend at an old friend’s beach house and was determined to leave work behind for it to be a truly relaxing time. She would spend two days alone in a beautiful place drinking good wine and reading a novel... her current idea of bliss. Though, in all honesty, she had slipped her dildo in her bag, just in case...

As soon as she was done with the half a dozen or so patients’ records, she would lock the office and leave right away to start a weekend that was sure to do her good.

She stretched her long arms above her head and returned to her meticulous scrawling. Half an hour later she was still filling patients’ files when she heard it.

Her head went up, eyes moving blankly as she strained to identify the sound she had just heard. She heard another thump and her heart jumped from the unknown sound. She stood up from her chair slowly, trying to identify the noise. Again, that sound. Her breathing quickened as she realised it was coming from somewhere right outside the door, most probably from the veranda. It was a strong but irregular thumping sound, almost as if something an object was being hit erratically. Her hand cautiously went to the phone to dial the 911 when the thump suddenly transformed into a clear knock. She let out a relieved breath, realising it was probably a patient who had seen light inside and thought they were still open.

Feeling silly to have been scared about such a small sound, she jogged out of her consultation room and down the corridor to the glass entrance door and, sure enough, saw a tall man in a dark coat peering inside. She started signalling him they were closed but something in his posture made her stop for a moment. He didn’t look well. She quickly unlocked the door and opened it.

    Are you alright sir?

The man, who must have been in his mid-thirties, was drenched though Sebeth was quite certain it had not been raining. As uneasiness started building inside her again, her eyes looked over his shoulder and she saw that the area outside was completely desert. He had not yet said a word, making her uneasiness grow more intense. He was almost slumped against the frame of the door, wet black hair falling in his eyes and breathing unsteadily. It was probably his body weight against the door that had been making the unsteady thumping sound. He had been using the door as support to
