Chapter One – England 1994, the invite

Come on, we’re going to be late.

You may have already guessed, we were on our way to a wedding, but this wedding was a little bit special for me, because it was taking place in the country where I was born, Jamaica.

Who was getting married? My dear cousin Ruby, she was born in England. I first met her when I went to live in England at the age of seven and she was six. As children we got on very well. Ruby was very much like her mother who was a very kind and caring person. So when she was eighteen and she introduced me to her boyfriend, ‘Cash’, many years ago now, I was very surprised.

Surprised because of how different he was from her. First, he was ten years older than she was. Second, he had the manners of a pig, and third he was small, smaller than she was and Ruby was not a big girl. When she told me that Cash was Jamaican, I didn’t believe her because his appearance was like an oriental gentleman with white skin, a Chinaman. But as soon as he opened his mouth and started to speak, there was no doubt he was Jamaican, right down to his big toes. There is a saying ‘Yu can tek de man out ta Jamaica but yu can’t tek de Jamaican out a de man’.

What was Ruby doing with this man I asked myself, and it wasn’t too long before I found the answer. Money! Ruby, like her mother loved money and Cash had money. He told Ruby he was a jeweller and he showered her with gold rings, bracelets and necklaces. She had found her prince. I didn’t think that relationship would last five minutes. I remembered, because of his pig manners, Ruby would always feel embarrassed when she had to introduce Cash to her friends. But to my surprise the relationship survived, they even had children, twin boys and a beautiful little girl.

After more than twenty years of living together, in sin, you can imagine my surprise when I received the wedding invitation. The first surprise was Ruby wanting to get married to Cash after twenty years... Why! And the second surprise was where the wedding was taking place... in Jamaica!

The 16th of July 1994 at 11 a.m. at St James Parish, Church, Montego Bay. The reception was to be held at the Dolphin Grill Holiday Inn Hotel, Montego Bay.

Well, after a big cup of tea I started to warm to the idea of going to
