    Chapter 1

T he story of my life’s journey begins at the age of ten. I was born in an island called American Samoa an island with beauty and hospitality. Someday I hope to revisit. My two sisters and I were fortunate enough to land in the United States land of freedom and opportunity. My mother had remarried to a young man from the island he was also serving in the United States Marine. When mother had settled in with her new husband she decided to bring my sisters and I to live with them. My mother had failed to mention that my sisters and I had a brother, who was about two years old. Leaving my grandparents back in the island was very difficult for my sisters and I. My sisters and I were very much closed to our grandpar ents.

While our father was on deployment mother spent most of her time teaching us how to read and write in the English language. Everyday after school mother greeted us at the front door taking in our homework.

Father came back from being on deployment he had new orders to be effective immediately. Being in the military it was to be accepted and mother knew that. Mother was pregnant with our sister Jessica on the way. Now there was five of us my brother Jake, Diamond, Valerie, Jessica and me.

    Chapter 2

M oving across the states to Virginia Beach, where father will be station made mother feel at ease with him nearby. The school in Virginia Beach was very formal. I was embarrassed to be the only person in the classroom who did not read nor write in the English language. I was sent home with a letter from my teacher concerning my progress which was not good I was already a grade behind. The letter pissed mother off.

Making every second count mother spent everyday teaching us girls to read and write the English language. The letter the teacher sent home had mother determined we girls were able to progress. Mother had little patience her teaching methods had me wishing I were back in the islands. Mother was very stern we had no time for outside play all the nursery rhythm books mother had brought from the public library we had to recite.

Our mother landed a part time job at night that left my sisters and I with the responsibility of cooking, cleaning and changing diapers. Our parents had high expectations of us kids it was very hard for me being that I am the oldest child so they expected more from me. I had mature at a young age. My parents were unfair and cruel. I had yearned for their attention, like any normal kid. I had lived with fear and betrayal from both my parents. At night I prayed and hid under my covers wishing I was back in the island. My only reason for not running away was my sisters and brother.

I have never seen snow before, and I can recall, the moment my brother Jake and my sisters Diamond, Valerie and I first laid our eyes on snow. I was amazed by the sprinkles of white icy flakes, that fell from the sky. I was from the island, I never heard of snow, it was truly amazing but it was cold. However, that didn’t bother us kids we loved playing in the snow, the most amazing part of snow it fell during the holidays, especially Christmas. I remember when our father took us kids to see a big man in a red suite named, Santa Claus he was bright and Cheery, and all the little kids lined up to see him. I was one of those kids who sat on his lap, and thought I was a bit older. Our Christmas that year, my sisters and brother Jake really had a great Christmas. The weather man predicted a heavy snow storm. We didn’t get stuck we made it home before the weather gotten bad. I believe my parents were fairly happy at the time.

    Chapter 3

V irginia Beach, a nice complex area surrounding base housing. The neighbors kept to themselves. Our family spent summers enjoying the beach and getting bit by jellyfish. Living on base you see families come and
