Foreword
Hello and thank you for buying my book.
In this book you will find some wonderful information to help you care for your Scarlet Macaw. I’ve included in this book information about their personality, temperament habitat, cages, diet, facts, set up, food, life span, breeding, feeding costs and a care sheet.
I have written this book using American spelling as that is what I’m used to. I have given measurements in both feet and inches/pounds and ounces and also in metric. I have also given costs in US$ and GBP. Both the measurements and costs are approximate guides. I have done my best to ensure the accuracy of the information in this book as at the time of publication.
I trust that after reading this book you will enjoy the experience of owning and looking after a Scarlet Macaw and that you have a wonderful time enjoying the pleasure they bring in the years to come!
All good wishes,
Rose Sullivan
Acknowledgments
A Scarlet Macaw is a truly magnificent bird and I must thank my dear friend Sue for introducing me to her gorgeous pal Azora who is one of the most inquisitive and engaging birds I’ve ever met.
Sue has given me her insights and experiences and helped me with the contents of this book along with some great feedback. Azora made her own contribution too by giving me an excited welcome every time I called.
I must also thank my husband Marc and our children Mike and Cathy for their love and patience as I end up spending most evenings working in front of the computer. Their understanding and love for my passion makes the whole journey worthwhile.

aviary – An aviary is an outdoor enclosure used for companion birds. Aviaries must be secure and you must be able to safely transport the bird into your home during inclement weather.
aviculture – The practice of keeping a bird or birds as a companion, along with all the necessary equipment and tasks to provide for their physical and emotional needs is referred to as aviculture.
beak – The upper and lower jaws or mandibles of a bird come together to form the beak. In Scarlet Macaws, the upper jaw is horn colored while the lower is black. They have the typical hooked beak present in most parrots, which they use in the wild to break open nuts and seeds.
cage – The indoor habitat used most commonly with companion birds is a cage commensurate with their size. Since Scarlet Macaws are one of the largest of the parrots, they require the biggest cage you can afford and house. Additionally, the birds need at least 2 hours of free flight time per day.
companion birds – Birds that live in close relationship with humans as pets are referred to as companion birds. Scarlet Macaws are especially popular in this
