A life-long animal lover, Lolly Brown is equally comfortable writing about exotic creatures like the Mexican axolotl or dispensing practical advice to dog owners about kennel cough. As a child, Brown first learned about fish and aquaria when her father brought home a 10-gallon aquarium as a surprise for his daughter. Within months, the father-daughter team graduated to a 120-gallon tank and were immersed in the intricacies of tank population management."We had that go-big-or-go-home mentality common to the hobby," Brown said. "Now I look back and think about what we did to Mama's living room! She was very patient with us."Brown's fascination with animals continued in college, where she took numerous field biology and wildlife classes that allowed her to view the behavior of many species in their native habitats. She calls this period of her life the "rodent years," since her only apartment roommates were two hamsters, Hemingway and Leo (Tolstoy). "I also adopted a Guinea pig purely because I couldn't stand the conditions in the pet store," she said. "Trust me, I was in no way prepared to care for Molly and I had to learn fast!""The only other time I went into a pet adoption blind," Brown added, "I came home with two green anole lizards. Then I found out I was going to have to feed them live crickets. While volunteering at her local zoo, Brown first encountered capybaras, a South American mammal that looks like an over-sized Guinea pig. The experience sparked her interest in exotic pets, a subject she continues to pursue with avid interest.A freelance writer by trade, Brown's animal books are written for her own pleasure and the edification of her readers. She is a strong supporter of animal rescue and welfare organizations, and works with programs educating young children about the proper care of pets.Brown maintains something of a menagerie of her own, making room in her home for a 180-gallon saltwater fish tank, a 20-year old Scarlet Macaw, a Golden Retriever, and several highly tolerant cats. (She advises that good cages make good multi-species homes.)"If I become interested in a particular animal and have no direct experience with the creature, I get some before I start to write," Brown says. "All animals have a unique perspective on the world and their place in it. They all have particular needs -- physical and emotional -- and they all have unique personalities. These are things I want to understand before I try to communicate them to my readers."

Foreword
Truthfully, the first eel
I encountered – or thought I encountered – was a Kuhli Loach, a whole little pack of them, in fact, that my father brought home from the fish store. I was a late-in-life child, so my parents worked extra hard at making sure they did all the proper kid
things with me. This included setting up an aquarium.
Of course, my Dad had difficulty with the term small scale.
Yes, we began with a nice little 10 gallon / 37.85 liter tank and within a matter of months had graduated to 120 gallons / 454.25 liters.
With his typical enthusiasm for projects, Dad acquired reference materials, studied water quality, pondered the merits of various filtration systems, and took to population management like an aquatic prison warden.
He archly warned Mother that her insistence on buying an angelfish was a mistake and when Neon Tetras started disappearing daily, he was proven correct.
The Kuhli Loaches, along with several large snails, were part and parcel of his tank cleaning crew
plan. In the end, I think he and I enjoyed watching the snails and the eels
more than the fish.
Kuhli Loaches love to hide, so more and more tank decorations were added for their specific use, including a tower with windows and passageways into which they would wedge their elongated bodies. They were, frankly, just plain fun and I can recall coming home from school in the afternoon and looking forward to seeing them each day.
I don’t know if my parents intended the aquarium to be as educational as it was, or if they were just seeking to divert my all-too-active mind, but I never forgot the Kuhli Loaches, which are, technically, eel-like
fish.
As I was researching this book, selecting species of eels to profile was difficult. The inclusion of some creatures, like the Saltwater Morays, was obvious, but it seemed that every time I thought my list was done, I’d run across another type of eel that someone, somewhere acquired and put in a tank.
I don’t pretend that the creatures I discuss here are all the eels that can be kept in an aquarium environment. I have tried to cover the ones you are most likely to encounter, including some creatures that, though rare, can still be purchased.
Clearly eels are of high-interest value in a tank, but almost all present specific husbandry challenges. Most of the largest eels are carnivores and cannot be used in reef tanks, but even the benign Spotted Garden Eel is a real estate hog, requiring 1 square foot / 0.09 square meter of open sandy substrate per eel.
In addition to profiling various types of eels, I also provide an overview of considerations necessary to creating an underwater environment. For experienced aquarists, this information may not be as relevant, but if you are thinking of starting a tank for the express purpose of raising eels, you must understand that it’s not just a matter of throwing some fish in a glass box full of water.
For one thing, have you even considered the issue of volume as it translates to
