    Do you dream of filling your home with bird song, the mimicry of a phone ringing, or a parrot-accented hello!? Whether you’re an experienced pet owner looking for a challenge or a first timer, there’s a feathered friend for you!

    Keeping a bird can be simple and easy. One or two birds can be housed in a small but comfortable cage if they are let out to fly regularly in a secure room. A flock can be accommodated in an attractive backyard aviary. Other start-up costs include bird food and lining (paper towel is more absorbent and less messy than newspaper). Your feathered friends need to exercise their feet as well as wings so most birds will require a variety of perches made from wood, the best being the tree branches. Birds require their water to be changed once or twice a day and fresh foods will need to be cleared and toys will be required for parrots. Moulted feathers, droppings and seed husks will litter the cage daily. Be sure to clean the cage each day, and use a mild detergent once a week on everything in the cage including feeders, perches and toys. A bird’s beak also never stops growing, so they will need cuttlebone to keep it trim.

    One of the biggest deciding factors in selecting a bird should be noise. Consider how much volume you can tolerate. Do you want a singer or a talker? Also, think about your neighbour’s reaction. One of the noisiest and most talkative birds is the African Grey. The Zebra and Gouldian finch are good low-volume birds.
