Introduction
Do you dream of filling your home with bird song, the mimicry of a phone ringing, or a parrot-accented hello!
? Whether you’re an experienced pet owner looking for a challenge or a first timer, there’s a feathered friend for you!
Keeping a bird can be simple and easy. One or two birds can be housed in a small but comfortable cage if they are let out to fly regularly in a secure room. A flock can be accommodated in an attractive backyard aviary. Other start-up costs include bird food and lining (paper towel is more absorbent and less messy than newspaper). Be sure to clean the cage each day, and use a mild detergent once a week on everything in the cage including feeders, perches and toys. A bird’s beak also never stops growing, so they will need cuttlebone to keep it trim.
One of the biggest deciding factors in selecting a bird should be noise. Consider how much volume you can tolerate. Do you want a singer or a talker? Also, think about your neighbour’s reaction.
