Will wipes harm gun finish?

Q Do hand sanitiser and disinfectant wipes affect a gun’s finish in any way?

A My experiments suggest that neither of these products have any effect on a gun’s finish. Most modern mass-produced guns have varnished stocks that are entirely resistant to the alcohol in both of these products.

The same goes for composition stocks, which seem resistant to almost anything.

Use a bit of caution with hand-oiled stocks, especially if you know that the finish has only been recently applied. That said, rubbing oil normally has some shellac in it to make it go hard more quickly.

Use sparingly and if you see any discolouration on the wipe, stop.
