Is rehoming former commercial hens high on your priority list? A surprising number of people seek spent layers, as they’re often called, and derive great satisfaction from seeing them enjoying natural freedoms that may not have been possible in their previous lives.
Despite this, Aussies in general are lukewarm about rehoming spent commercial hens. In the UK, the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT), a charity, saves over 50,000 hens annually from slaughter by acquiring them at the end of lay and rehoming them as family pets.
