“What’s wrong?” Catherine asked as she entered the living room.

“All of these powers I have, and I always seem to be too slow or too late. If I had learned how to use my gift sooner, or if I’d been more disciplined about trying to figure out what my visions meant, maybe I wouldn’t always fail at everything.” His jaw was set in a firm line, his body tense with rage and frustration.

Catherine sat beside him. “You’re not failing. You’ve done nothing to let me down, and I believe that you’re doing the best you’re capable of doing. If you hadn’t told me about my father when you did, we would have never made it here in time. Another five minutes and he would have been dead for sure.”

The whiskey glinted in the light as he swirled it around the bottom of his glass. “I’m not used to feeling like a failure.”

“You are not a failure,” she told him. “You’re the man I love, and you’re the only one I trust to help me stop this evil from ruining our lives.”

“My father, you mean.”

“Yes, your father. There’s no way around it, Anthony. You’re going to have to fight him before this is over, and I think it’s best you start preparing yourself mentally now.”

“I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll be strong enough.”

“You don’t have to know it,” Catherine said. “I know it well enough for both of us.”

Eden Laroux was born on November 27, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a father who was a butcher and a mother who was a florist.Her mother, originally from Saint-Emilion in France, migrated to the US to become a textile worker.Eden Laroux was born as Emilia Domini. She had an elder brother, Calvin, and has a sister named Philomena.Her father, a second-generation Italian immigrant, left Emilia’s mother for a laundrywoman, who was also of Italian descent. He was a gambler and an alcoholic. It was learned later that he not only stole money from his employer, but also left the family with gambling debts to settle.Eden was 14 at the time, and the experience of being abandoned and deceived seared into her memory – a theme which showed up in most of her early literary works – sad poems and essays--and in her college years, short stories for various creative writing classes.Eden's brother Calvin chose to leave his own studies and worked odd jobs to supplement their mother’s income, which was obscenely meager, after their father left.Despite financial difficulties, Calvin pushed Eden to work for a degree, and through his and other people’s help, she was able to get a scholarship to attend college and study English Literature.Three weeks after Eden's graduation, Calvin - a closeted homosexual - was killed in a freak accident at work (stabbed by his partner in the middle of a long drive for an out-of-town furniture delivery). He had “come out” only to Eden. He and Eden had been very close, owing to their father’s leaving and their mother becoming undone and distraught.Philomena, Eden's younger sister, is the family’s joy and the family’s artist. Chapter One

CATHERINE JUMPED TO her feet and rushed to her husband's body where it lay sprawled on the stone floor of the small hut. The Mother of Bones rose slowly, followed after her and picked up a mug from her kitchen table. She ladled water from a wooden bucket into the mug and handed it to Catherine, who looked at it skeptically and hesitated to take it.

It's just water, the young soothsayer said.

What did you do to him?

The woman laughed and placed the mug on the floor next to Catherine. I didn't do a damn thing to him. He just got a little over-excited, that's all. Hopefully he doesn't react like this at every bit of bad news, because there's more to come.

A low groan let them know that Anthony was coming around, and Catherine offered him the mug of water when he was finally able to sit up. He had an expression of shock and confusion on his face that reminded Catherine of how he had been after they had killed Adeline and torn the amulet from his neck, but he seemed not to be suffering any memory lapses this time.

I feel like an idiot, he mumbled.

Catherine helped him to his feet and he went to the door to open it and step outside. The cool air and misty droplets of rain that blew in under the hut's awning helped to clear his head. Anthony thought back to the man he had seen in the dream state, and it was clear that he had not been simply looking at an older version of himself. There were subtle differences in the shape of the eyes and jawline of the man he had seen, but the resemblance was still uncanny. It was easy to look at a young man and to compare him to a photo of his father when he had been the same age, but those father--son similarities became far less noticeable as two men aged. Anthony looked so much like his father that it caused him a twinge of worry that he might share the same demented lust for power and hatred as the man who seemed determined to kill him.

He was so lost in his thoughts that he hardly noticed when Catherine came up beside him. What are you thinking about? she asked.
