“WHAT WAS THAT?” asked Catherine. Her chest heaved as she drew a ragged breath. It was as though the oxygen had been sucked from the room and was only just being released back a bit at a time. Her head swam with a thousand strange images of Anthony and her together. Memories that couldn’t be real.

“I... I don’t know.” Anthony reached up to stroke her cheek. “We know each other, don’t we? It’s not possible, but I have these memories of you. Eden Laroux was born on November 27, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to a father who was a butcher and a mother who was a florist.Her mother, originally from Saint-Emilion in France, migrated to the US to become a textile worker.Eden Laroux was born as Emilia Domini. She had an elder brother, Calvin, and has a sister named Philomena.Her father, a second-generation Italian immigrant, left Emilia’s mother for a laundrywoman, who was also of Italian descent. He was a gambler and an alcoholic. It was learned later that he not only stole money from his employer, but also left the family with gambling debts to settle.Eden was 14 at the time, and the experience of being abandoned and deceived seared into her memory – a theme which showed up in most of her early literary works – sad poems and essays--and in her college years, short stories for various creative writing classes.Eden's brother Calvin chose to leave his own studies and worked odd jobs to supplement their mother’s income, which was obscenely meager, after their father left.Despite financial difficulties, Calvin pushed Eden to work for a degree, and through his and other people’s help, she was able to get a scholarship to attend college and study English Literature.Three weeks after Eden's graduation, Calvin - a closeted homosexual - was killed in a freak accident at work (stabbed by his partner in the middle of a long drive for an out-of-town furniture delivery). He had “come out” only to Eden. He and Eden had been very close, owing to their father’s leaving and their mother becoming undone and distraught.Philomena, Eden's younger sister, is the family’s joy and the family’s artist. Prologue

HIS BARE FEET splashed through rainwater as he wandered the darkened hallways of his house. A fine mist hung in the air, making it difficult to see the way ahead, and every time he thought he was reaching a place he knew, he discovered that everything had changed. It wasn't his first time in the dream house, and it shifted and rearranged itself to confuse him. He was as lost now as he had ever been, and there was nothing else to do but to keep walking. Cold water lapped at his ankles and he shivered against the droplets that fell from the ceiling to land on the exposed skin of his back and shoulders. She would be here somewhere. She always came to him eventually.

Lightning flashed through a skylight and illuminated the way before him. He had reached the grand staircase in the main foyer, and he descended, stepping carefully to keep from slipping in the torrent of water that cascaded down into the darkness. He walked for what seemed like hours, never reaching the bottom or seeming to move very far away from the top of the stairs. Water rushed and curled around his feet as it flowed along, threatening to pull him with it, should he loose his balance. Still he walked.

After a time, he splashed down into deeper water. Each step took him down another stair into the inky black liquid until he felt flat ground under his feet. The water was above his waist now, and he had to stride hard against it to keep walking forward. He could see the front door, but a current was building against him. He had to lean into his steps and push hard to make progress against the flow.

Inch by inch he closed the gap to the door. With a great lunge forward, he latched onto the door handle and wrenched it open. The large double doors swung inwards and a fresh torrent of water slammed into his chest, throwing him backwards and sending him tumbling underwater. For a moment, he lost awareness of what was up and what was down; but the current slowed and he was once again able to plant his feet on the floor so he could thrust his head upwards and into the air again.

Gasping for breath, he opened his eyes and saw what he had known would be waiting to meet him at the end of his journey. The water came up to her chest, just covering the swell of her bare breasts, and she observed him with piercing green eyes
