    About Donna Stellhorn

    Introduction

The Chinese lunar calendar dates back to 2637 B.C. and is still used today to help guide people in their lives. There are twelve animal signs and five elements, and when combined according to the guidelines of the system, we have a complete cycle lasting 60 years.

This year, we are slightly more than one third of the way through the 78th cycle. Each year in the 60 year cycle has a different energy. This year we will experience the energy of the Wood Horse.

This book offers a great deal more than most annual Chinese Astrology books. In addition to predictions for each Chinese Zodiac sign for 2014 – including in-depth predictions for love, money, career, family, health, and protection – I have outlined specific Feng Shui solutions for the year. This book will be the ideal tool for you to use as you gather the most positive energy and the greatest luck (and good fortune) for yourself and your family in 2014!

Feng Shui is the study and practice of using things in your environment to affect a change in your luck. Feng Shui is an ancient practice, yet it's still an extremely effective way to create change. Objects and energy in our personal environment affect us on a subconscious level.

When we access the power of Feng Shui, we may suddenly find ourselves more able to see opportunities; we have greater energy to grab hold of what we want. And we gain the confidence to move forward toward our goals.

Chinese philosophers say there are three forces in our lives, called the Three Lucks. Heaven Luck is our astrological chart, which reveals our individual talents and the challenges we may encounter in our lives. Human Luck is our willpower and motivation to succeed. Earth Luck is the energy of the places where we live and work, the Feng Shui of our environment.

In this book, you will learn much about what 2014 holds for you and your family. You can find out what your Heaven Luck reveals about your love life (and if you're already looking for love, tips for success), your finances, job prospects, your family, and more.

We'll take a look at your Earth Luck, and offer specific tips and instructions about things you can do to bring or increase the positive energy flow to your life. You'll find tips and suggestions for changes in your home and office.

For those of you interested in increasing the size of your families this year, I've added special tips for a Feng Shui cure for each sign, to enhance the likelihood of fertility. I know many who want to grow their family this year, so if you are among them, you'll find tips to help attract fertility energy your way.

Let's begin! We'll start with an overall perspective of the energy this year, then explore the predictions for each sign. I hope you enjoy the process. I'd love to hear your comments, and if you have questions, please email me at donna@2014chineseastrology.com.

Moving from Snake Energy to Horse Energy

Last year, in 2013, the Year of the Snake, I mentioned we would hear numbers and statistics in the news and media, giving us the impression the economy was stable, and everything was okay. The stock market rose to new heights as the Fed continued to pump money into the economy. This trend continued, all the while many, many qualified and talented people could not find jobs. It continued while many students graduating from universities and colleges had to move back in with their parents.

Last year I explained how Snake energy would bring all of us lots of mistrust. This couldn't have been more true than in U.S. Politics. We had gridlock in Washington, D.C. By mid-2013 we could read the NSA wiretapping story as it hit the news. A lone whistle-blower revealed that anyone could be wiretapped at any time.

In the 2013 book, I mentioned how good Year of the Snake was going to be for business, and indeed we saw many businesses grow, and retail spending increase. We saw the mergers of American and U.S. Airways, and we heard of mergers for Office Depot and OfficeMax, news outlets, digital communications companies and more...

In fact, one Monday in April there were 52 billion dollars of merger deals announced in one day! And real estate prices were continuing to rise. By mid-year 2013, prices were up 10% over the same period a year earlier. After the recent price crash in 2007-2008, buyers have fearlessly stormed back into the real estate market.

These are just a few highlights from last year. Now we're entering the Year of the Wood Horse.

    What is Horse Energy?

When you think of a horse, most likely one of four images leap to mind. Each one of these is an aspect of the energy we will experience this year.

Race Horse: This energy encourages us to identify or pick a goal, and shoot for it. You can benefit this year by having one single focus and letting nothing distract you from it. Train for it. Eat for it. Work for it. There can only be one winner. Losers get put out to pasture.

Plow Horse: This is the energy of working from dawn to dusk today, and then the next day getting up and doing it again. It's your duty and there are no alternatives. Without your tireless labor the family falls apart. Your income is vital and whether you like your job or not, you must continue or else everyone starves.

Show Horse: This is the energy of having all the spotlights focused on you. This is your moment and everyone is watching! Yes, you have practiced and received the necessary training. Yes, there were preparations to make. Yes, you're wearing an 800-pound silver saddle. But you feel great! This is what you love to do. And you know you were born to do it. Applause please.

Wild Horse: This is the energy of the Stallion galloping free across the prairie, your mates running with you! There are no clocks or schedules, no obligations or duties – just freedom and fun, the wind in your mane, your muscles responding to the excitement of the open space all around. Fun! You eat where you want, sleep when and where you want. And you run with whomever can keep up.

You can choose to express any of these energies during the coming year, or you can experience a combination of several. This year we'll see horse energy manifest in our friends and family, in governments, communities, and corporations. We'll experience all aspects of the Horse in every part of our lives.

    How We View Horse Energy

To further explore the energy of 2014 we can see how the word horse has been used in our own language. We use the phrase horse sense to describes a person who has good common sense or street smarts. When we think someone is making a poor choice we might say: You're backing the wrong horse..

For example the phrase: Horse feathers!, is used to describe something that's not worth considering. (Since horses don't have wings they would not need feathers.) This reminds us that the Horse energy is practical/logical by nature. Horse energy is very forthright and honest, as we can ascertain from the phrase: ...straight from the horse's mouth..., meaning: This is a reliable source of information.

We begin to figure out that this year's energy of Horse is going to help us learn. We'll uncover the truth about many things – and we will figure out how we can use this information to help us make our decisions.

When we discover new information it may be about: ...a horse of a different color..., meaning we now see the subject or the thing differently than we did before. But, if another person goes on and on about their views, we will say they are: ...beating a dead horse!.

Probably the most used horse word today is horsepower. This is used to describe the power of a car engine. This reminds us of the power of the horse, and its seemingly limitless energy. We also sense the unbridled energy in the word: horseplay, which usually means children are roughhousing, and something is going to get broken.

Horse energy moves so quickly, we may be cautioned to ...hold your horses!, or hear words which echo the thought we shouldn't change horses in mid-stream!. We'll want results quickly too – the faster the better, but even so, we are likely to be advised, Don't put the cart before the horse!. (Nor should we delay in making decisions, as that would be like: ...closing the barn door after the horses have left the stable.)

This will be a year when trying to hide the facts will not be tolerated. If someone is making a horse's ass out of themselves, they are playing the fool. If we say someone is full of it! (i.e., horse s-##-t) we mean they are being untruthful. If someone is too proud, we might say they are on their high horse, or they ...need to get down off of their high horse!.

Finally, we may see/hear the words (or be part of) a horse trade, which means involved in a process where it will be necessary to bargain shrewdly. This reminds us that even though the Horse isn't always concerned with how much money he has in the bank, he still wants a good deal. The energy of this year will be good for business dealings – as long as both sides feel they've gotten a bargain.

We can find more insight into the energy of the Year of the Horse through stories and phrases like these. They reveal what we already know about the cultural and traditional energy of the Horse and let us gain a sense of the types of experiences we will run into during 2014. Here is an enlightening saga from the Chinese tradition.

    Old Sai Loses a Horse

There once was a old man named Sai who had one son and one horse. And one day the horse ran away. The neighbors came and proclaimed, Oh, you are so unlucky! But old Sai said, Maybe it's good, maybe it's bad. Who can say?.

The next day the horse returned, and along with him were five wild mares. And the neighbors came and exclaimed, You are so lucky!. But old Sai said, Maybe it's good, maybe it's bad. Who can say?.

A few days later the son tried to break one of the wild mares; he fell off the horse and shattered his leg. And the neighbors came and said, Oh you are so unlucky!. But old Sai merely said, Maybe it's good, maybe it's bad. Who can say?.

A week later the army came to take all the able-bodied men in the village off to war, and when they saw the son with the broken leg, they did not take him. And the neighbors came and said, Is this good?. An old Sai just shrugged and walked away.

This story reminds us to take life in stride. While things may not be as good as they seem, they may also not be as bad as they seem. This is a good lesson for 2014 and the Year of the Horse. We need to trust in our ability to handle the difficult things life throws at us. Yet, we cannot simply bury our heads in the sand and expect that everything will be just dandy. Each positive thing that happens in our lives comes with a lesson. But each lesson brings a gift.

    The Trojan Horse

Years and years ago there was a proud trading city called Troy. Across the Aegean Sea from this city lived the Greeks who were in constant rivalry with Troy. That rivalry evolved into a long and terrible war.

Growing tired of war, the Greeks built a giant horse made of wood and left it at the gate of Troy, pretending it was an offering to the gods for their safe return to Greece. But secretly they hid their best warriors inside the wooden horse. The rest of the army burned their tents and sailed their ships to a nearby island to wait.

The Trojans thought the Greek soldiers had fled. All of the people of Troy were filled with joy and they flung open their gates and pulled the wooden horse inside. It is said that as the people of Troy attempted to pull the horse through their gates, it stopped four times on the threshold and each time the clink of armor could be heard from inside the body of the wooden horse. But the Trojans pressed on, continuing to pull and pull until the wooden horse was inside their gates.

That night, the Greek warriors opened a hidden door from inside of the wooden horse, and crept out of their hiding place. They rushed out into the sleeping city. They killed the Trojan guards who were left on duty, and opened the gates of the city of Troy for their comrades who had returned by boat to take over the town. And that's how the Greeks won the war against Troy.

The story represents how a trick or a strategy can be used to gain access to a protected place. It also warns us not to blindly accept an offering from an enemy. In the Year of the Horse we need to remember to not be gullible, to never allow ourselves to be taken by surprise.

Sometimes as we seek our goals we are filled with enthusiasm and excitement about reaching our desired outcome. This optimistic combination of emotions can cause us to take chances we might otherwise avoid. And in our haste, we may may even take the step that leads us to failure.

    The Dragon/Horse

Have you heard of the legends of the Dragon Horse? This animal had the shape of a horse's body and yet was covered in dragon scales. He had wings on his sides, and was able to walk on water. In writings from the 10th century B.C., the dragon/horse was described as being 8 feet tall. His mane looks like the back of the dragon, and the sound he makes is that of a flute.

It was said he moved at an unbelievable speed and could cover 300 miles in an instant! Because of the power and grace of this animal, the name given to this creature, longma, has come to represent an important person or a person of vigorous energy in old age.

There is a Chinese saying connected to the Dragon/Horse that goes like this: "long ma jing shen". It means you hope the person will have much energy in the new year and that everything will go well. There are similar legends of such an animal in Greek mythology, in Babylonian history, and even in Japanese folklore.

Global Predictions for Year of the Horse

    World Affairs in 2014

In 2014, Year of the Wood Horse, we are halfway through the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac. Horse year is a great year for optimism. This is a year when we begin to see the results of decisions we made 6 years ago. From an international perspective, we can see countries implementing new and helpful programs for their peoples. There will be innovations in healthcare, social services, and an introduction of wonderful new technologies.

But like the two sides of a coin, there will be difficulties in some parts of the world – countries where the structure of society is disintegrating, and populations are banding together to seek new places to live and new leaders to lead them.

This year we'll begin to recognize the trends of the coming years in this cycle, seeing glimpses of how things will trend for the next six years. If a country is struggling, it will continue to have to work very hard to get back on it's feet. On the other hand, nations which are excelling and posting record growth will continue to grow and expand.

Horse energy is very direct and in-your-face. We will see world leaders and corporate leaders making bold statements. We'll see people come together and form groups (much like wild horses come together in herds to run across the planes). These people and groups of people will march or take action to achieve mutual goals, but unless a strong leader arises, these groups will disband just as quickly as they came into being.

Horses like speed, so we can expect to see transportation highlighted. Things like high-speed rail will be discussed and new projects will be launched. Alternative fuels will be used to carry us further distances, while at the same time offering us fuel economy and more miles per gallon. However, we'll also see cars with bigger engines and greater horsepower grow popular once again.

    World Health in 2014

Horse energy is generally healthy energy. This is usually due to a combination of optimism and exercise. But while this may be true for individuals (who can take personal action to improve themselves and their personal health and well-being), this energetic may not always express itself in a useful way or have much of an impact on the world at large.

One example of the expansive way horse energy can manifest, and the quick movement which is the signature energy of Horse, may affect large populations this year. It can be the result of the particularly social nature associated with the energy of a Horse Year. In Horse years it is not uncommon to experience the rapid spread of infectious disease. And, because we particularly don't like to be cooped up indoors during Horse years, we are more likely to be around others spreading or catching germs.

The Chinese Zodiac sign of Horse rules the lungs. Therefore we can expect to see articles or news about health issues related to breathing and/or the lungs in general. Perhaps there will be advancements in cures for lung ailments in general. There will also be a renewed interest in air quality, and how it affects our children. You may see more people wearing face masks in their daily life. And there may be a breakthrough in the treatment of asthma.

Because Horse is fond of exercise we are likely to see the exercise industry continue to grow. There will be an emphasis on methods of breathing, highlighting the way breath affects the physiology. Running will increase in popularity again. And, of course, we will see much about riding and working with horses as exercise for both the mind and body.

When planning international travel keep the social qualities of Horse in mind. If you're going to be on an airplane with its recirculating air, you will
