    Chapter 1

    Why Feng Shui?

Have an argument with a friend or a co-worker? Making a presentation for a client? Have a date with someone new? Signing the paperwork for a new car? Going on an interview for a new job? Meeting your future mother-in-law? These are easily identifiable stressors that all of us encounter from time to time.

What about the simple things, like running late to an appointment with an important business contact or speaking up at a weekly meeting at work? Or having to get your child ready for school when they want to sleep in?

These and many more regularly occurring stress factors disrupt your peace of mind, create static in your personal energy field and disturb the flow of your routines. Any feeling of STRESS impacts both personal and environmental energy levels. Stress is one of the most common indicators that a life is out of balance.

Many of us encounter stress on a daily basis—in our jobs, in our relationships and in our homes. Something as simple as getting out of bed five minutes after the alarm clock goes off can cause us to feel like we are running late everywhere in our lives that day! Challenging life experiences (like a divorce, filing bankruptcy, losing a job, being in a car accident, learning that you have a life-threatening disease, etc.) cause even greater stress!

Some things make us feel good. Think about how it feels when you receive a raise or promotion. Remember when you graduated from school, received some recognition for community service, or your children made you feel proud? Have you had an adventure lately or enjoyed a fun-filled vacation? What about the simple things like celebrating a birthday or holiday with family and friends? Or, watching your child succeed at a new task, enjoying the evening with good friends and cherished others?

Feelings of success, good fortune, being in love, being appreciated for your skills, having time to read a good book, finding that your investments are doing well or locating the perfect home to buy are pleasant ones. All of these happy experiences increase your satisfaction with life.

The Chinese have an excellent word they use to describe the various kinds of energy that exist in all people, places and things: Qi. (You may see this word spelled: Ch’i, Chi, Ji or, the way it is in this book, Qi—in every instance it is pronounced chee.)

Qi is in the earth, in the mountains and rivers, in the cities, in towns and in villages where we live and it’s in you and in me. This force circulates in our homes, in the traffic we encounter on our way from place to place, whether we are in our vehicles or on foot. Qi flows through the quiet countryside, along roads less traveled and in the places where we work, play and relate with one another.

Qi is a word that can be used to describe the flow of personal energy in our bodies, in our lives and in the lives of those we love. Qi, the balance between Yin (the female, yielding energy) and Yang (the masculine, penetrating force) moves like a river of life through everything and every living creature on the face of the earth.

Qi influences how we respond to our world, to the people, situations and experiences of our lives. Qi moves like the wind, like light and sound; it can even flow through solid objects. Qi is also like water, ebbing and flowing like the tides. Sometimes the energy is quick, strong. It impacts everyone who comes in contact with it. Sometimes energy is weak and meandering or unfocused. To describe the flow of this life force, the Chinese have taken the words for water and wind to create the concept, Feng Shui.

Feng Shui is about identifying the Qi all around us in our lives, attracting the right Qi to where we want it to be, and encouraging it to move on if it
