Introduction
My mother Josephine & me
On a cold, cloudy, snowy day, Mom was in the kitchen, singing and humming to Christmas carols while making cookies. I walked into the kitchen, just a boy of eight years old and watched her roll out the dough and cut out Santa Claus faces with her old traditional cookie cutters. Can I do some?
I asked. Of course...here, cut a bunch out for me,
Mom said warmly.
I’d watch her put one batch in the oven and take one out. This is fun!
I thought. Can I put a batch in the oven?
I asked. No, you’ll get burned,
she said.
Soon, the rest of the family came home and being the youngest, I was eventually nudged out of the kitchen.
Shortly before, Mom and I went downstairs to the cellar and added wood and coal to our large furnace, since Dad was at work. The gravity heat rose steadily throughout the cold and drafty house.
As I sat down on the huge dining room floor, next to the heat register, I could hear the whistling wind from a severe snow storm outside. To thaw out, I stood on the register until the bottom of my feet started to burn from the intense heat. Ouch!
I said, as I jumped off and then an idea came to me.... That’s it!
I walked into the crowded kitchen and went to a lower cupboard and found an old tin pie pan. Everyone was talking about the day’s events and Mom had a clump of dough pushed aside, from the trimmings of the cookie cutouts. Can I have this?
I asked shyly. Yeah, go ahead,
she said, in the midst of conversation.
I took the pie pan, my clump of dough and went into the half-lit dining room, where I sat down next to my own ‘personal oven’ which was the heat register. I formed some round cookies, placed them in the pie tin and then on top of the cast iron grating. Even though the fragrance of Christmas sugar cookies was coming from the kitchen, as I sat on the floor cross-legged with anticipation, my cookies were baking!
The heat blasted away and I was hoping that the fire would stay consistent in our furnace and it did. Will ya look at those cookies cookin,
I said
