This is dedicated to all the animal lovers in the world,

no matter what kind of pet. Especially dedicated to all

the pets I’ve ever had who brought me joy, love, and yes,

even sorrow…Suki, Toy-Toy, Ginger, Gi Gi and

    Miss Dusty.

    Dusty

It was a brisk, windy autumn day…

Walking along a dirt road one morning not far from

his house, all of a sudden eight-year-old Timmy heard

    a faint Meow.

He walked a few feet away—he heard it again.

    Meow.

It sounded like a baby or kitten crying. As he started

to walk away, he noticed a burlap sack next to a tree.

He picked it up and inside he saw a small kitten. The

color was a light dusty yellow. He pulled it out—it

looked like it was about three months old. He put the

kitten inside of his jacket. The kitten nuzzled against

his sweater and started to purr.

Timmy held the kitten tight and said to it, "You’ll

never have to worry about anyone hurting you again.

I’ll take care of you. I know, I’ll call you ‘Dusty,’

    because of your color."

He looked at the kitten’s eyes. They were a beautiful

green, the color of grapes. The kitten stared back at him

and blinked in approval. Timmy hugged the kitten

tight under his jacket. Half walking and half running,

he went home to show his mother his treasure.

Timmy walked into the kitchen. His mother was

    cooking at the stove.

She turned around and saw a bulge under his jacket.

Timmy, what do you have under your jacket?

He looked down at the floor, shuffling his foot back

and forth, trying not to look his mother in the eye.

"Well, young man, I’m waiting. What did you bring

    home this time?"

His mother knew deep in her heart Timmy was a

great animal lover. Ever since his father passed away

when he was five, he had wanted a pet, but she always

said no. Now, she thought was the right time. Timmy

    was older and more responsible.

He lifted his head and looked at his mother with an

innocent look. "Mom, I found him in a burlap sack. I

think someone was trying to hurt him. Please, please,

    can I keep him?"

His mother stood at the stove, hands on hips,

shaking her head and a smile on her face. "Okay, let’s

    see who he is."

    For the Love of Dusty

Timmy opened his jacket and a little gold head

    popped out, meowing.

Timmy’s mom took the kitten from his jacket and

held it gently. The kitten looked up at her and

    meowed.

"I think he’s hungry. We’ll give him some milk. Oh,

yes, let’s check him out first." She held the kitten

upside down on his back gently. She checked his fur

for any fleas, his ears to see if they were clean. She
