Kim opened the door to her flat and carefully placed her grocery bag on a chair. She had managed to get away from work early and do some shopping for a special meal tonight. Her flat mate Gina had been going through a tough time recently and she had decided some comfort food would do her the world of good.

They had first met at university and had always got on very well so when they both got jobs in the city sharing a flat had been an easy decision. After a few weeks of living together Gina had surprised Kim by confessing she was a lesbian but their friendship easily survived this development and they had enjoyed the lifestyle of young single professional women living in the heart of a lively city. Kim had dated some guys and occasionally one had spent the night, so when Gina had surprised her one evening by returning from a Friday night out with a breathtakingly pretty petite dark haired girl Kim hadn’t minded in the least. It was the first time her flat mate had had a lover stay over, and Kim had found her thoughts had kept wandering to what was happening in the bedroom next door as she had lay awake that night. The next morning Kim had found herself sharing breakfast with Gina’s new girlfriend Tia and within minutes they were chatting away like old friends while Gina slept. Kim was glad her friend had found a girlfriend, especially one as nice as Tia. She was happy to see them become close very quickly and in a short time Tia had become a permanent resident at the flat too. Kim’s friendship with both the girls ensured there was no awkwardness between the three of them.

All that had changed very suddenly a few weeks earlier when Kim returned from work one evening to find Gina in floods of tears, Tia gone and the happy atmosphere they had created shattered. When Gina had calmed down a little she told Kim that a discussion about their future as a couple had somehow got out of hand and, to Gina’s surprise and shock, Tia had decided that some time apart would be good for both of them. Kim hadn’t seen Tia since and Gina seemed inconsolable without her soul mate. Kim was hoping that some home cooking would help Gina out of her despair, but in her heart she knew that only Tia’s return would make her friend happy.

Kim took her shopping to the kitchen, absentmindedly tucked her long blonde hair behind her ears and began to prepare the meal she had planned, but a sound from Gina’s bedroom
