Madison Blue
On a sizzling July day in Los Angeles, Madison Blue blasted the a/c in her black BMW 335xi Coupe as she maneuvered through midday traffic. The cold air provided welcome relief from the heat wave outside, but it was also the source of an unwelcome flashback. She suddenly and vividly recalled the chill emanating from an overhead vent in the conference room of DeivTech Corp the prior week when the promotion to vice president was announced. She was sure she had it in the bag after ten years of 14-hour days and complete devotion to the medical devices company, including being recognized as the top-performing manager for the past four years. None of the other managers could hold a candle to Madison’s work ethic and drive. They couldn’t compete, and she knew it. So certain that the promotion was hers, she pre-booked today’s celebratory all-lesbian cruise to the Mexican Riviera as a reward for her years of hard work.
Rather than a celebration, however, the cruise would be a consolation prize after the vice presidency was bestowed upon a manager Madison had trained in her third year with the company, Kelli Griffin, the CEO’s mistress. While Madison had been putting in the hours at the office, Kelli was putting in the hours in the bedroom. The searing memory of that betraying moment stung.
Madison turned the a/c vents down and made an effort to change her focus as her shoulder-length brown hair ceased its fluttering around her face. She didn’t want to allow herself to dwell on something she had no control over, regardless of how unjust it was. But no matter how hard she tried, her thoughts returned to all she had sacrificed over the past ten years. She came to DeivTech straight out of college and gave the company every weekday and night, and some weekends. She lost friends and missed out on new relationships that could have flourished if she hadn’t been so immersed in work. She pretended to be straight so she would fit into the conservative corporate atmosphere only to have her lesbian partner break up with her after year seven because she couldn’t continue living a secret, hidden life. All that occupied Madison’s mind now was everything that she had lost in this decade-long battle for some illusory symbol of social achievement that ended up going to someone who had been competing on a completely different playing field.
Why, she wondered, hadn’t she paid more attention when she heard people speak of the grind
and the rat race
when she was young? The terms, she now fully realized, were piercingly accurate. She had been an outstanding athlete in college, soccer and track, and believed her competitive drive would pay as many dividends in the work world as it had in the sports world. But there are no referees in boardrooms ensuring that the executive officers are playing by the rules and promoting those who are working hard to get ahead instead of those working hard to give good head.
Fuck,
Madison said aloud as she tilted her sunglasses down with a finger and glanced in the rearview mirror at the dark circles under her eyes. I should’ve put on some concealer.
The circles were remnants of her sleepless nights since the promotion debacle, and they told her what she already knew: that this vacation was long overdue.
