As a police officer for a major metropolitan area, I make frequent visits to local hospitals to interview suspects, victims and potential witnesses to crimes. After my shift one night, I stopped at St. John’s on my way home to talk to the victim of a hit-and-run bicycling accident. I really felt for this guy. He was severely injured while biking with his kids, and I was determined to catch the cowardly driver before too much time separated him from the crime.

After interviewing the victim, I reviewed my notes as I walked the main lobby to exit the building. Some aspects of the case were starting to come together, and I had a promising new lead to look into when I got to work the next morning. As I made this realization, I passed the nurses’ station and heard a familiar voice call my name.

Officer Benson, my favorite nurse and secret crush, Harper, called after me, and my attention immediately moved from work to her smiling blue eyes. She was wearing a light, pastel summer dress and sandals, with her purse draped over her shoulder. She must have just finished her shift, I realized. Her low-cut dress outlined and revealed her full 36C’s in ways her scrubs never could, and it took all my will not to notice.

Hi Harper, I said, returning her warm smile. How are you?

I’m okay, but I could be better, she replied. My car wouldn’t start this morning, so I had to have it towed to the shop. They’re still working on it. Something about a distributor cap or rotor or something, I don’t really know, she explained, mildly flustered.

I’m sorry to hear that, I said sympathetically. Do you need a ride anywhere?

Oh, yes! she said, clearly relieved and gratefully grabbing my forearm. I was just going to ask you. Thank you. I just need a ride home. It’s only about a mile away, but I would rather not walk at this time of night, so ...

Yeah, it’s no problem. I just signed off myself, so I don’t have anywhere else to be, I told her, and we headed out the door.

On the drive to her house, Harper rolled down the passenger window, closed her eyes and let the night air have its way with her long blonde tresses. Her hair danced playfully around her angelic face and delicate neck, as the wind gently lifted the hem of her dress. This mesmerizing visual caused me to almost rear-end the car ahead of me, and the slamming of the brakes caused her to open her eyes.

What happened? she asked, alarmed.

Oh, nothing … uh … a squirrel ran across the road and I didn’t want to hit it, I lied, as we approached her house.

This is me, she said, and I stopped the car in front of a cute, tidy bungalow with roses lining the front fence. Why don’t you come in for a drink and hang out for a minute? You said you’re off duty and have nowhere else to be, right?
