The Mysteries of the Magical Horse - P.J. Flynn
CHAPTER ONE
My name is Victoria but most people call me Vicky. I’m thirteen years old and live with my Dad, Mark, my Mum, Susan, younger brother James, who’s ten, and my little sister Jasmin, she’s five.
We live at The Stables, which is the name of the small-holding we own in a village near Northampton. We have three horses to look after, twenty sheep, four goats and six milking cows so everybody has to help out with running the business.
My main work is looking after the horses, it sounds straightforward enough but it is time consuming. I have to feed and groom them and clean out the stables, that’s the smelly part, but I don’t mind because my reward is to get to ride the horses.
My favourite horse is a beautiful chestnut called Red; he’s a real stunner with a fabulous shiny coat and a mane and tail the colour of burnished gold; I really do adore him.
Sunday is my special day for exercising the horses; I get up early, do my chores and get them ready for exercise. You wouldn’t believe the amount of straw they go through or how long it takes to do a good job but, by the time I’ve finished, their stables are spotless and their coats gleam like polished wood. Sunday afternoon I like to take Red for a ride, which I always look forward to. It’s our time together and that’s always precious to me. We have all afternoon just to ride around and thoroughly enjoy ourselves and I know he enjoys it too because of the good mood he’s always in. He becomes very excited in the morning but always waits patiently for his exercise and run.
Now I have a truly amazing story to tell you, a story you’d never imagine happening to anyone but it happened to me!
I felt really strange when I woke up; the orangey coloured sun was streaming through my bedroom window. I thought what a beautiful day it was. I didn’t feel like rushing out of bed so I lay there looking at a flock of birds flying nearby. After a while I sat up and could see the squirrels busily scurrying about. Then I realised it was Sunday so I jumped out of bed, got washed and dressed as quickly as I could, then hurried down-stairs to begin my day.
Mum had got my breakfast ready and I ate it quickly, still full of excitement, not really knowing why I had this amazing feeling inside me but I carried on with my daily routine as normal.
After dinner it was Red’s turn to go out for his run, which we were both looking forward to.
I felt odd as I walked into the stables; it felt like Red had been waiting especially for me in a different way than usual. I thought no more of it and quickly put the saddle on him, walked him out of his stable and into the courtyard. I mounted him and trotted into the fields, unaware of what the rest of the day would hold.
I was riding Red towards the firs; it’s a beautiful place for a quiet and peaceful ride. With the wind gently blowing in my face and the sun shining through the trees, my life seemed perfect with my great friend Red, feeling so powerful carrying my small body as if it were a feather. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. We walked aimlessly between the trees and I noticed all the beautiful wild flowers. I stopped Red and tied him to a tree so I could pick some for Mum. I found quite a lot so they made a lovely posy, she’d be very pleased.
When I turned round to look for Red, to my great surprise, there stood a handsome young man! He was taller than me and was staring at me with his deep blue eyes, his red hair shining like fire in the sunlight. I asked him where he came from and who he was.
Just around, and my name is Jack.
He carried on staring at me and that made me feel even more uncomfortable. I wasn’t sure what to say to him so I told him my name was Victoria.
Yes,
he said, "I know.
This left me even more confused so I asked,
How do you know my name?"
I know quite a lot about you.
Again I asked him,
How is that possible?
Because I do,
he replied
I became very puzzled and wanted to know more about this strange young man who seemed to know all about me when I didn’t know anything about him and had never ever seen him before this day. Again I asked him where he came from; to my astonishment he said that he lived nearby.
What school do you go to?
I queried but he still didn’t reply. What do you do, then?
I asked, getting really frustrated.
Nothing really
he replied, just waiting for the right person to come into my life.
What?
I replied, What do you mean by that?
Something cracked behind me so I turned round to see what it was. It seemed to be nothing but, when I turned back to carry on our conversation, Jack had vanished and was nowhere in sight. Panic set in; I just stood around looking and listening, not sure what had happened, quite scary in fact! Then I saw Red, still tied to the tree. I walked up to him, untied him, jumped on his back and rode slowly out of the firs.
I was concerned about where Jack had disappeared to and who he actually was, where he had come from and how he knew my name? All these questions flooded my mind but would I ever get the right answers? I kept thinking about what had happened in the firs. We’d talked for what seemed ages but I still didn’t know who Jack was. I’d been picking flowers then suddenly, out of nowhere, Jack had appeared, and then vanished as quickly as he had come and my forgotten friend Red re-appeared in front of me. My brain clicked into overdrive, why hadn’t I seen Red all the time I was talking to Jack?
We headed home rather slowly which was partly my fault as I was deep in thought and not really feeling the need to rush because I had to get all the recent events into perspective. I was still wondering where Jack had gone; I’d taken a liking to him and thought I recognised him from somewhere but wasn’t sure where. I wondered if I’d ever see him again.
We arrived back at the stables; I rubbed Red down then went into the house, still with all those unanswered questions inside my head.
That night I went to bed and, after a couple of hours, dropped off to sleep. It was then I had the strangest dream; not vivid enough to explain but involving a horse, maybe one of mine, and about it turning into a young man! As I woke up I almost thought the dream was real but only for a split second because I knew this couldn’t be possible. By now I was certainly not in the mood for school. I had the horses to attend to and wanted to ask Red some important questions but knew
I wouldn’t get any answers from a horse! I felt so silly even thinking that my dream could’ve been real. How could it be real? I looked over at Red, he seemed happy enough eating his meal, not even looking at me. I walked slowly over to him and patted him on the back and he seemed
