About this ebook

The 1930’s were the Golden Age of Radio. Radio was the equivalent of television today with stations the same as today such as ABC, CBS, and NBC and others that had disappeared. Radio shows consisted of comedy, drama, suspense, kids and detective shows as well as afternoon “soap operas” catered to women at home which earned their name by being sponsored mostly by soap companies. The popularity of radio remained into the late 1940’s when television broadcasting became preferred. To know what was going on in the world, you got your news from newspapers but more quickly, from the radio.

While the bombs are dropping over there, Henry Cranston is the Voice of radio over here. His deep tones resonnate the news, the drama and sports over the air waves all day long. His deep tones captivate Gracie Alexander, a succesful fashion designer. After a chance meeting they can heardly get each other out of their minds but will their love stand the tribulations of World War II?

    Nothing, But A Dream

    By Amber St. Clare

    One. In the Beginning.

There was little doubt about it, that water was damn cold. After Henry had fallen through the ice the others wasted no time in asking if it were indeed freezing. Having grown up and told by their parents to be careful around the thin ice it was obvious they had heard but did not listen. The others ran for help knowing why they should, but did not have the foresight not to be playing around it. It was the same type of intelligence all twelve-year-old boys had and will have forevermore.

Henry Cranston was in the center of a hole in the ice. Surrounding him the ice was cracked for five feet in every direction. The water surrounding him was not moving fast so he was able to keep his head above water as he was also a good swimmer. There was no use extending a branch over the web of ice for any weight would shatter it. The fire department was going to have to think of something clever indeed.

If, of course, they arrived in time.

Two. And Then There Was Gracie.

Oh don’t be such a jerk come with me! Gracie shouted.

No I will not Gracie Alexander. I want to stay home, I really do. Evie stated back to her.

Evie darling, Sam has only been away in service for a month now. The war isn’t going to be over anytime soon AND you can’t sit at home until he returns so let’s go out! Gracie laughed as she struggled pulling her friend off the sofa.

No, if we go down to the canteen I’ll see all those sailors and only think of Sam. Evie said with a tinge of sadness.

Well good you can keep his memory alive! Now get your spectators on and let’s go! Gracie said throwing the shoes at her.

I don’t feel like dancing. Evie moaned.

Gracie leaned in close to Evie ready with a bribe. I heard that Harry James may be dropping in to play.

Harry? Evie asked, her face lighting up.

Three. A Voice Built for Radio.

Henry stood with script in hand at the microphone and waited for the On the Air light. The sponsor finished his message about floor wax when Henry’s light came on.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen… the rich deeply toned Voice came on the airwaves. No matter what Henry chose to say he captured an audience. He could talk about the process of paint drying and it would still be intoxicating to hear him speak. It was the way he sounded that made the man.

"I’d like to talk to you a moment before the news to tell you about war bonds. Purchasing a war bond does not only help fund the war but boasts morale to the brave men and women in
