About this ebook

It had taken eight long hard years for Doctor Kim Keegan to achieve her goals. Eight years where she had literally pushed everything aside before living her own life. Carter Brighton had waited and waited. Every time he proposed to Kim she had a reasonable excuse to turn him down. But he kept asking. Through the eight years she had driven him to study and qualify with a few degrees of his own. But the time had come for Kim to move back home. To settle down and start seeing Carter again. They were childhood sweethearts. Even though they had been dating for eight years it was at a great distance and not common knowledge. The way they felt it didn’t really matter. They were head over heels in love with each other. Kim’s last year of her studies was grueling. It was her final year. And the year that she almost lost touch with Carter. But something happened to change everything. Everything in Kim’s life was scheduled and planned, but not Arthur. He was a very big surprise.

    CHAPTER 1

Carter sat and held Jedd’s hand. How are you Granddad? Jedd smiled and nodded. He spoke very slowly as he had problems breathing. He had a very weak heart. It was so difficult to speak at times. He slowly nodded. Carter. Carter sat quietly and looked at his Granddad and waited for him to speak. Arthur. So beautiful. You. He put up his hand and showed him his thumb and smiled the biggest smile ever. He closed his eyes and went to sleep for the evening. Carter smiled as he watched him drift off to sleep. Carter was quiet for a while. He didn’t know what his Granddad meant. He slowly slipped his hand out of Jedd’s and left the room.

The nurse smiled as she walked through. He is comfortable. He isn’t in pain. He is in for a good night’s rest tonight. Carter smiled. The nurse smiled. He has had a very exciting day today. He had a few visitors. His favorite was here today. Arthur. Carter nodded. Who is Arthur? The little nurse smiled and shook her head. Family. Carter looked at her. Family? She nodded. Mister Brighton’s Great Grandson. Carter looked at her. My Granddad doesn’t have a Great Grandson. She looked at Carter and gave him a bewildered look. Oh? Carter nodded. He came with someone today. Carter looked at her. Maybe I am wrong. But I was so sure. Carter nodded. You must be mistaken. She nodded. Carter smiled. Night. She nodded. Night. Carter walked out of the hospital and dialed his Dad.

Dad. Carter. Do you know anyone by the name of Arthur? Gosh no. Other than you. Carter chuckled. Don’t get clever. Are you sure you don’t know of anyone by that name. Carter, no. I don’t. Well, someone visited Granddad today. By the name of Arthur. News to me. Maybe it is one of his friends. Dad. Granddad isn’t allowed anyone other than family visiting him. Then I don’t know. Thanks. Carter, why are you asking? Seriously Dad. The nurse said it was his Great Grandson. Daniel roared with laughter. So. Are you the culprit then? Carter roared with laughter. I don’t think so Dad. Daniel grinned. Nice thought though. Carter chuckled. Your Mum is nodding. Yeah right. Thanks Dad. He put the phone down and headed home. Arthur was soon forgotten.

A week went by. Carter felt he had to go and visit Jedd. He spent an hour with him. He soon left. Knowing the end was rather soon. He walked out at eight and said good night. Feeling that it might be the last time that he would see Jedd. The Doctor walked in an hour later and sat with Jedd. He died as she sat holding his hand.

Carter, Jenny, Susan and Wade walked over to the car.  It was a sad day. They had all stood around their Grandfathers grave paying their last respects.  It was a very private little gathering. They had already held a memorial service in the morning but they wanted their Grandfather buried with the immediate family alone. It was a private affair. They stood at the vehicle and hugged their parents and their Gran who walked off to their car. Carter hopped in behind the wheel.  Home.  They all nodded and were quiet.  Carter just sat. Gazing through the window. He didn’t move. Granddad lived a good life. I know we are going to miss him. But he had a really good life. They all nodded. It was only the last month that was just too sad. He wasn’t in pain or anything and they did look after him. They all nodded. Wade smiled. The Jedi. They all chuckled.

Mrs. Brighton smiled as she slowly walked towards the car with Daniel and Angie. Carry on. I’ll meet you at the car. They both nodded and walked ahead. Mrs. Brighton slowly walked. She smiled as she looked up at a young girl who came running. She opened her arms and hugged her. Oh Kimmy. She hugged Mrs. Brighton. Don’t be sad. He was happy when he died. I know Kimmy. I know. Kim turned and walked with her arm around Mrs. Brighton. He died with a smile on his face you know. He wasn’t sad. And those last words. They were touching. Mrs. Brighton giggled. He was always a very. Naughty. Young man. Kim giggled. I’ll say. When he said ‘tell Martha to stick around for about fifteen years. Check out the grand kids. And only then think about leaving. No less than fifteen years.’ I thought that was really sweet. Mrs. Brighton chuckled. I loved him to bits you know. Just like you and your young man. Kim sighed. Mrs. Brighton smiled. Remember one thing Kimmy. I spent every day with Jedd. We chatted. He never kept secrets from me. You realize that? Kim looked away and nodded. Yes Ma’am. Mrs. Brighton nodded. Sort yourself out Kimmy. Mrs. Brighton stopped and cuddled Kim. I will. She kissed Mrs. Brighton and slowly walked off.

Carter sat and watched the young woman and his Gran. He whispered to himself. It can’t be. He stared and straightened up in his seat. He looked up as the young girl walked closer and closer.  She had a figure hugging pair of jeans on with a pair of sneakers.  She wore a pretty little red blouse and she wore a baseball cap pulled down so that her face was a little hidden.  No one would recognize her. Carter watched as she walked.  He could almost not breathe. He felt as the breath gushed through his lungs. He wanted to cry. He wanted to scream. His dreams had come true. She was home. She was home! Carter closed his eyes and said a silent little prayer of thanks.

Kim carried one flower.  A yellow rose.  His Grandfathers favorite flower.  He looked at her as she walked past.  She looked at Carter and looked away and nodded and gave him the slightest little smile.  He nodded and held back on his smile.  He watched as she walked past and walked over to the graves.  Carter watched her in the mirror.  Are we going to actually go Carter?  Yeah.  Carter watched the woman in his rear view mirror and smiled.  He started the car and couldn’t stop smiling.  He watched her walking closer and closer to the grave that they had just left.  Their Grandfathers grave.

He got out of the car and everyone watched him.  He leaned over the car and watched the woman.  Carter smiled as he watched. They would think he was an idiot if he had to sit in the car and smile. He watched as she stood at the grave and gently threw the rose into the grave.  Bye Jedd.  I am going to miss you. She felt her eyes prickle as she stood and looked down.  She went down on her knees and spoke.  They are going to miss you.  I am going to miss you.  But you are in a good place now.  A really good place.  She was quiet for a while.  I am glad I was there when you died.  I know I couldn't do anything for you.  That is the difficult thing about being a Doctor.  Sometimes there is just nothing you can do.  But I was there to say good bye.  Thank you for that. Thank you for being my sounding board.  Carter stood and stared. He watched as Kim spoke to his Grandfather. Kim smiled. I am so glad you got to meet Arthur. I think maybe one day there will be a few more. But for now. I think Arthur is it. Yes I will sort myself out. And soon. Gosh I really have procrastinated. Haven’t I? Kim chuckled. Okay. Leaving now Jedd. Thank you for being so helpful. And be good up there. Behave yourself.

Susan shook her head.  You okay Carter?  Yeah.  Just give me a minute or two.  Susan smiled and nodded.  Carter looked at the woman.  He knew who she was.  Where she had come from.  He watched as she stood up.  He watched as she started walking toward the car.  She looked up and the heavens suddenly opened.  Carter looked up.  It was such a sudden shower.  Kim giggled and sprinted.  She pulled her cap down a little and made a mad dash for her car which was miles away.  She ran as hard as the rain.  She suddenly stopped just behind the car.  Carter dove into the car.

Kim started to walk slowly.  She put her hands up in the air and stopped.  She giggled.  Oh well.  If I am going to get wet let me enjoy it at least.  Carter grinned as he watched her walk.  She was soaked.  Her blouse clung on to her body.  Her jeans were soaked.  He watched as she took her peak cap off and fiddled with her hair.  It fell right to her waist. It looked like a curtain of hair. Pitch black and so thick. Everyone in the car stared.  Susan whispered. Who is she? Carter smiled and watched.  Susan grinned.  Oh what the hell!  She took her big jacket off and got out of the car and laughed.  They all got out of the car and stood in the rain. Kim turned and looked and laughed.  The rain was wonderful.  It felt so cleansing.  They all stood and smiled.  They were getting soaked. Carter roared with laughter.  God this feels good!  Wade nodded.  He looked up at the sky.  Bye Granddad!  This rain is just for you!  Jenny smiled and started to sing.  I'm singing in the rain.  Just singing in the rain.  They all joined in.  What a glorious feeling, I'm happy again.  Just singing, and laughing in the rain.  They all laughed.  Jenny grinned.  She looked up and smiled.  Carter smiled. He kept looking at the woman walking.  He could not take his eyes off of her.  He spotted a car parked under the trees.  It was probably her car.

Kim took the key out of her pocket.  She smiled and looked up. Just for you Jedd.  Just for you. Rain, beautiful rain.  Kim unlocked the door.  She looked around to see if anyone could see her.  Carter watched her. But she couldn’t see him.  She was standing next to the car and looking around.  He watched as she wiggled next to the car.  He could just make out what she was doing.  Kim took her sneakers off and put them in the car.  She wriggled out of her jeans and stood in her G-string.  She quickly pulled her blouse over her head and stood in her underwear.  Carter stared.  He almost let out a groan. He could see everything from where he stood.  He watched as she grabbed a huge blanket and wrapped it around her body and got into the car.  It was an enormous four by four.  He had seen the car somewhere before.  But he didn't know from where.  He had admired the car.  He even knew the number plate.

Okay?  They all nodded.  They each grabbed their coats and hopped in to them.  Keeping warm.  Carter grinned and shook his head.  He started driving.  Kim waited for them to pass and reversed out of her parking.  Carter smiled.  She had the blanket around her body.  He almost groaned.  He knew what was under that blanket.  And what he had seen he approved of.  She was gorgeous. And she always wore beautiful underwear.  Carter smiled to himself. He knew what she looked like in the nude. He knew how she felt up against his body, under his hands. He knew every single part of her. Every little contour was etched into his brain. And he missed her. He missed her so badly it hurt. He was so in love with her. Some days he felt as if he couldn’t function without her. Life wasn’t worth living without her. Kim smiled as she followed at a safe distance.  Carter turned left and she followed.

Jenny grinned.  Who on earth is she? I wish we had seen her close up.  Carter smiled and shook his head.  He was watching her in the rear view mirror.  Wade shook his head. I haven't a clue.  But she knew Granddad.  And by golly I need to know everyone who knew Granddad.  Susan grinned.  Yeah right Wade.  You so wish.  Wade smiled. Maybe it was his girlfriend.  They all chuckled.  Carter shook his head.  They were so good to him.  Weren't they?  They all nodded. We visited every week.  The Doctor came daily you know.  But we never got to meet her.  Carter looked at Susan.  Her?  Susan nodded.  I know for sure.  Because the nurse gave me feedback every night when I got home.  Carter nodded.  Her?  Susan smiled.  Yes Carter.  Granddad's Doctor was a woman.  Actually, a young lady. Edgar has been away for a month and she has been standing in for him.

Carter nodded.  So Nurse Nora knows her.  She certainly does.  Carter smiled and nodded.  Nurse Nora will be questioned.  Wade grinned and looked out the window.  Interrogated.  Jenny chuckled.  And why would you want to know about the Doctor now?  Carter smiled.  He watched as Kim pulled over.  She reached down to the floor and grinned.  Oh thank you!  She quickly slipped her blanket off and climbed in to her white coat.  She groaned as she got a call on her cell phone.  She pulled the coat straight.  This is Doctor Keegan.  Nurse Nora smiled.  We need you. Mister Walters is not well. His wife just called. He is in agony and insists on seeing you first.  On my way.  She pulled back on the road.  Carter was almost crawling he was driving so slow.  Wade grinned.  Company on the rear.  Carter grinned.  He watched as Kim drove up, put her indicator on, and passed Carter.  She waved as she got in front of him.  Carter smiled and waved. She put her foot flat on the accelerator.  Wade stared.  Hell.  Is there a turbo in that thing?  Carter shook his head.  Don't know.  Carter went faster. They followed her all the way.  She took the same turn off.  She drove past their ranch.  Carter frowned.  He watched as she kept on driving like a woman possessed.  Susan shook her head.  Must be a crisis or something.  Carter nodded.  Or something.  Wade grinned.  Uhm, Carter.  You just missed home.  Carter grinned.  He stopped the car and made a U turn.  Jenny grinned and shook her head.  Who do you think she is?  Wade groaned.  Probably had to rush off home to feed the husband.  Carter grinned.  I don't think so.

Wade grinned.  And why not?  "Because.  If that was my wife.  She would not step out on

her own.  Not in those.  Carter cleared his throat.  Jenny smiled. Those what?  Sneakers.  Susan chuckled.  Yeah right.  Since when was she wearing white?  Carter grinned.  Oh she is wearing red as well.  They all looked at Carter.  She had a red blouse on.  They all nodded and looked at Carter.  Jenny shook her head.  But hang on a sec.  She had on jeans and a red blouse.  When did she change? Carter grinned.  Wade roared with laughter.  Not at the cemetery? Carter nodded.  Wade groaned.  She stood and got undressed and dressed at the
