I am a Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist with over 40 years experience in Psychology. I worked with adjudicated youth, directed a mental health clinic for homeless people, and devoted the last 22 years of my active clinical practice to work in a Community Crisis Clinic. Though formally retired from clinical work, I have kept my license active. For now, my psychology work consists of occasional guest lectures at local colleges.I am presently pursuing my life-long passion for writing. I like my fiction to be character driven - but with a plot. I am an active member of the Kansas Writers Association and have published short stories in KWA anthologies in 2016, 2017, 2018.

There was something different about the boy that day, but what? What was different about the boy that day? Well, his hair couldn’t decide if it wanted to stand up, or lie down. No, that wasn’t different. He was alone and oblivious to the other people on the street. Nothing new there.

The man moved closer

The boy stepped into the triangular space between the front corners of a couple angle parked cars.

Hmmmmm, did he do that because he sensed me coming, the man thought.

The boy stood looking down, a piercing beam of light bounced off the windshield of a parked car so intensely it caused the boy to grimace and sweat beaded on his forehead, yet he stood fast.

Am I so far into his head that he can sense me coming without even looking? Is he so terrified that he can force himself, against all natural instincts, to not look at the only thing moving in his environment – me! The man started to laugh, but the laugh brought coughing and wheezing and the spitting of phlegm.
