Description

Read along to practice your English and to learn the English terms PICTURE-PERFECT and PERFECT STRANGERIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English term picture-perfect. If you describe something in English as being picture-perfect, it means that it has no flaws. You could say, "The other day I went fishing and it was a picture-perfect day." That would mean the water was calm. The sun was shining. The temperature that day was probably amazingly perfect. You would say, "It was a picture-perfect day to go fishing." Sometimes we even describe families as picture-perfect. Sometimes there are families where the mom and dad are very attractive and the kids are all really cute. And we just say, "It's a picture-perfect family." So when something is picture-perfect, it means it is without flaw. I guess it just means it's perfect, but we like to say picture-perfect to emphasize it a little bit.The second phrase I wanted to help you learn today is the phrase perfect stranger. When you meet someone who you don't know and you you've never, ever seen before, we say that they are a perfect stranger. It's kind of a weird little phrase. Here's a good example though. Here's something that happened to Jen and I one time. We were at the mall and we were in the food court at the mall eating food with all five of our kids. So the food court is the place at a shopping mall where you can buy food. There's lots of restaurants. And we were sitting there, all seven of us, eating food and a man walked up and he was a perfect stranger, neither Jen or I had ever seen him before in our entire life, and he gave Jen $50 and he said, "It's really cool to see a big family like this. Normally people only have one or two children now. And I remember when I was a kid, I grew up in a really large family." So he was a perfect stranger. We had never, ever seen him before in our life. He was a perfect stranger and he gave us $50 because he thought that because we had so many kids it was really cool.So anyways, two little stories there for you. So once again, if something is picture-perfect, it means that it has no flaws and it just looks amazing or is amazing. And a perfect stranger is a stranger but kind of a stranger who you've never, ever seen before. Sometimes you'll see someone on the street or you'll see someone at work who is a stranger to you, but a perfect stranger is someone that you've never, ever seen before in your entire life.Hey look, let's look at a comment from a previous video. And this comment is, I think, from Cat's English, at least that's what Google translate told me that your name was. So thank you Cat for this comment. "Knowing the meaning of really something and something else is really something." So this was a little play on words by Cat from the lesson that I just did on the phrases, really something and something else. And it's a great English sentence. So basically what she's saying is, if you know those two phrases, it's really something. So again, knowing the meaning of really something and something else is really something. And my reply was, "Haha, awesome use of both phrases."So just so you know, sometimes in my comments, I reply with, "Haha." It doesn't mean I'm laughing at you. Simply saying, "Haha," simply means you made me smile, okay? So thank you Cat for that comment. That was a great comment from that video. I'll put a link up there to that video if you haven't seen it yet.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadian)
