About this ebook

Janet was thinking about ending it with her current boyfriend. He had once again put his motorcycle ahead of her need for him to care about her. All she had asked for was a ride to the grocery store as her car was in the shop. Again.
A girlfriend volunteered to take her and as they shopped and talked, Janet met Jerry's eyes for an electric moment. She felt as if they had both touched a live wire. She was stunned. She could tell he had felt the 'jolt' as well but he hesitated and her girlfriend broke the spell by asking a question. When she turned back, the mystery man was walking away. Was he married? Was he worth pursuing? Would she ever see him again?
By the time she had worked up the courage, he had left the store. She vowed hat she would come back again each week at this time, hoping to run into him again. They met again the following Saturday...

This book is a work of fiction. Any similarities to persons real or imaginary are coincidental. This story is inspired by an actual event that happened to a friend of mine. What follows is NOT what happened in his life, but what I imagined COULD have transpired had he had the courage to follow-up after the encounter in the store!

    About the Author

    Chapter 1: The Thunderbolt

Jerry pushed his cart through the deli section at the rear of the store. He was doing some weekly shopping for minor items while his business-partners’ wife, Pam, did her shopping. Jerry had driven Pam to the store because her husband was on a trip. She couldn’t drive anymore since her accident several years ago.

Jerry was in his late twenties and still single. Rather tall, and slender, his eyes tended to light blue or gray, depending on the light. Smile-lines framed his eyes and mouth.

He’d had several relationships since his mid-teens, but his inability to relate to the various girls and their perceived needs had killed-off every relationship. He had managed to propose to one shortly before High School graduation, but she got distracted in college and broke it off with him. Since that time, he had resigned himself to remaining single.

He wasn’t looking for a relationship anymore. In fact, he had despaired of ever finding a woman that would tolerate his fascination with technology and his lack of social skills. That warm Saturday afternoon would change his perspective, and his future, in ways he’d never dreamed.

Janet was angry. She had asked Gary, her boyfriend, to take her to the store because her car was in the shop. Again. He had told her that she would have to wait until he got back that afternoon from a trip to the motorcycle show at the mall. She had hung up on him, furious that he had once again put her second to his needs.

She started to walk to the market when her girlfriend, Gayle, saw her walking to the store. Gayle volunteered to drive Janet to the store as she needed a few things as well. Janet told Gayle about her latest tiff with Gary and Gayle empathized with her.

At the store, Janet grabbed a cart, and she and Gayle walked side-by-side along each aisle. As they rounded the end of an aisle at the back of the store, Janet met the eyes of a man just turning away from the delicatessen case. A jolt ran through her, and she could see that he was stunned as well. Gayle had gone on, not noticing Janet’s reaction but turned back in time to see her face. Concerned, she stepped back and then followed her gaze. She saw a tall, slender man in denim jeans and pink shirt staring back at Janet.

Intuiting that Janet was somehow surprised by this encounter, she placed a hand on Janet’s arm, and that broke the connection. Janet turned to Gayle and asked breathlessly Did you see him?

Yes. Is he someone you know?

Janet looked back, but the man had turned his cart and was starting to disappear down the next aisle. She started after him, tossing an answer over her shoulder No, but I want to meet him!

Gayle hurried to catch up with Janet and grabbed her arm. "You can’t just go chasing after a guy! Besides, you have Gary right now. You know how jealous he can get. If he finds out that you’ve even talked to another guy, he’ll blow a gasket!"

Janet hesitated, knowing that Gayle was right. She cast a longing look at the slowly-retreating back of the mystery man, wondering how to finagle another encounter. Gayle poked Janet in the ribs and said "You have no idea if he is even interested, or single. Just your luck, he’ll be married and has kids!"

Janet sighed. You’re right. Then she glanced at Gayle with a mischievous look in her eye. I wonder if I can ‘happen’ to bump into him again. I wonder if he shops here often.

Gayle shook her head in exasperation. "Girl! You are just asking for trouble! Even if he is single, Gary’d have a fit, and you might end up with another black eye!"

Janet shriveled in on herself, knowing that Gayle’s prediction was spot-on. Once, at a party Gary’s biker friends had had at the beach, Gary had decked another guy that had tried to talk to her. When she had tried to separate them, Gary had ‘accidentally’ back-handed her trying to push her away from the fight. He had gruffly apologized later, but her feelings towards him had cooled considerably.

Gary’s response to her request for help today had been the last straw. She had been looking for a way to end things but was afraid of Gary’s temper. She had heard from a couple of mutual friends about Gary’s reaction to girlfriends leaving him in the past. Janet was worried she’d end up on the receiving end of one of his tantrums.
