    Chapter One

‘Be cold inside, Macaulay,’ I reminded myself. ‘Stone cold, like the perp. Make friends with being cold on the inside.’ All the best Detectives are cold inside. That way the lingering stench of death doesn’t get on you.

As one of the best black female Detectives in the Newhall Yard City precinct, I had started my career at a steady pace, before transforming myself into a headline-grabbing Police officer. I was credited with having achieved the most arrests ever, in the history of new recruits to the Newhall Yard Police Department. I soon made Detective in Homicide; taking out the scum one perpetrator at a time. Keeps me going, along with good coffee.

Often the first to respond to the call to attend a crime scene, I kept a satchel with me at all times which was filled with pens, small notepads and my cell phone. And a cookie. Chocolate chip.

I was already in my car when the call came through-another murder. Now I was on my way to a crime scene in New Jersey. Today was a two-cookie day. I could feel it.

I took the back streets to avoid the heaviest traffic and reached the crime scene quickly. At the door to the apartment building I flashed my shield at the uniforms guarding the entrance, put on plastic shoe covers and latex gloves then I went inside.

The Crime Scene Team and the County Coroner were already working the scene when I finally reached the victim’s body. My partner, Detective Baines, was already at the scene.

I adjusted my satchel and squatted so I was level with Detective Baines’ eyes.

Derek Baines was my partner of twenty years, and my live-in boyfriend of two years. Only 4 other people knew about us being involved; just both of our parents. Having the support of someone acutely involved in policing the criminal underbelly of life, and who shared an intense passion for bringing criminals to justice was exhilarating; and it glued us together from the start. It also helps that he is African-American and stands six feet six inches tall and has an athletic body.

What have we got, Detective? I said. Detective Baines gave me the once-over look, which I liked. I felt myself blush crimson when his eyes lingered over my breasts for way too long. Hey. I had to bing his focus back to the case.

Hey. Victim’s name is Deanne Morris, she was 33 years old. Neighbor says he heard loud voices, heard someone shouting, and then heard dishes smashing up against the wall late last night. He was the one who called 911.

Any witnesses? What about the rest of the apartments on this floor?

Uniforms are canvassing the area, so we should have more details soon.

Thanks. I’d better go and see what the Coroner found. Derek took my gloved hand briefly and ran his thumb across the back of it.

See you soon Baines said, and left my side.

I headed over to the Coroner, Hank Anderson.

Hey Hank. I grabbed a notepad from my satchel before putting it to one side behind me and kneeling beside him carefully on the parquet wood floor.

Hey, Macaulay. Hank was almost sixty years old, with a big belly he kept trained in by using a waist support for a bad back, which he also had complained about
