    CHAPTER 1

The patient slowly opened his eyes. He raised his arm instinctively to shield his face from the harsh overhead lighting, which made his eyes water with the effort. He tried to focus for a moment upon what he could feel. What he could hear. Only the relentless pounding of his heart and the incessant chatter in his mind. He took a beat to look around and make the required calculations. He needed to get the hell out of there before it was too late.

    What could he hear?

Distant voices outside the long narrow stark white room grew louder, moved inside his room. The voices and the shadows merged as people moved closer to him now, while his mind screamed from the horror of a rush of pain flooding his neural network and he lost focus momentarily. When he came to consciousness there were two people silently standing next to his bed. A man and a woman stared at him. Spoke in hushed voices.

He’s waking up. The man stood to the left of the patient’s bed and looked at the monitors surrounding his sleight frame.

Can you remember what happened, Mr Garrett? the male voice came, and then a beam of light from a thin pen-like object was shone into his eyes in turn; before the man clicked it off and slipped it into the top pocket of his green scrubs. There was a stain. Red blood on the man’s chest. A bright contrast against the lime green fabric, and his green nylon cap was askew. The blonde woman wore a white coat over jeans and a navy blue shirt with patch pockets.

Pain. The patient managed to utter a single word before he passed out. The female leant over to check his pulse, administered a new bag of fluids to his I.V. and then gently wiped the patient’s face with a cool washcloth. The woman turned to look at her colleague; seemingly he was the one in charge. That patient’s
