    CHAPTER ONE

After waving over to signal the group to raid the building, the inspector’s knock on the door was loud and rapid.

Open up! This is the police, he said.

A tall heavyset man opened the door and the police quickly made their way into the lodge. Inside four people were seated having lunch.

To what do we owe this visit from our city’s finest? asked the person at the end of the table.

Quiet Donno, said the Inspector, we have something we’re looking for.

Well, this is the fourth time this year you have graced us with your presence, I think a call to my lawyer is in order. Inspector you are searching once again for things that do not exist, Donno remarked, hey, but search all you want, you’ll find once again I run a legitimate business.

From behind the police a person came in wearing a sweat jacket with a hood over his head, a large pair of sunglasses, and a surgical mask covering his mouth. He nodded once to the inspector, then they and two other officers walked toward the filing drawers. The hooded man opened it up and started to pull out multiple manila folders. In a low voice the man said to the inspector, Here’s the order.

Who the heck is that? asked Donno Hey you punk don’t mess with my receipts.

The inspector made a call on his cell phone. Hey Sergeant, this is Inspector VanMeer. Would you be near some crates marked with order number FK7893418?

About ten seconds later, a response came over the phone. Yes, it and two others are right in front of me, said the voice over the phone.

Open the crates and see what’s inside. The inspector directed.

After a minute a voice came over the phone saying, we see only toolkits, plumber’s toolkits.

You see, once again you have made a costly mistake inspector. Donno remarked.

Okay, Sergeant let me ask, does the wood surrounding the box seem kind of thick?

Yes, it does, the Sergeant responded.

Just take a sledgehammer then and smash the side of the crate.

Will do, A few seconds later, a loud thud was heard on the phone and then the Sergeant responded loudly Jackpot.

You bastard, screamed Donno, as one of his colleagues stood up and tried to approach the police squad. He was quickly subdued, and all five people in the office were handcuffed and read their rights.

The inspector moved up front and closer in to Donno. Wow, Donno you also had a really busy night last night. It will probably be the last one you see outside of a prison cell.

    What do you mean?

We know of your little trip last night. Truthfully, we weren’t even going to pay you a visit today. We were waiting for that much larger shipment to arrive a couple days from now. But your little trip last night hastened our encounter.

I have nothing to say to you VanMeer, replied Donno.

You made sure that one of your competitors would leave the business, except not by his own accord. Daniel Candor, medium size street drug hound. You picked him up and quietly escorted him up Mount Halmus; during the ride you plugged him in your car. You later buried the body about 15 feet up from the end of a trail. Now this is interesting, you then drove 14 miles and walked about one mile down a trail and threw the shovels down a narrow ravine. Also, it was rather clever how you tried to hide the murder weapon inside the hollow bumper of a broken down car near Halmus Park. The inspector then pulled out a bag with a gun inside of it and his demeanor took on greater confidence. We have the body, Donno, we have your fingerprints on the shovel, a small amount of Daniel’s blood on your shirt that was just picked up at your local dry cleaner, another bloody shirt from your henchman there, with Daniel’s blood, that he put in a garbage bag and later threw into a local dumpster, and a load of ordered drugs to boot.

Then inspector continued, What is truly interesting is that on all orders of regular goods the letters of your initials ‘DZ’ are separate, but on your orders with drugs, your initials are connected.

Donno looked at the inspector with a stunned look. The inspector looked at him straight in the eye. Some of those other orders will probably be coming in later this week, I suppose. It is check mate this time, anything else Donno?

Donno turned to the heavyset man. It was you, Larry. You lousy bastard, you ratted us out, I’ll kill you.

No boss, it wasn’t me honest. The man replied.

Wow, Donno, making murderous threats now, you just keep piling on the points don’t you. Take them out to the van.

As the inspector was talking to officers outside the lodge, a squad car pulled up and a man in a suit came out and yelled over to the inspector. Inspector Matthew VanMeer, will you and your friend there come with me please?

Yes Sir, he replied, then all three men got in the car and drove off.

The Lieutenant looked over at the inspector with a suspicious look on his face. Inspector, please enlighten me as to how you were able to take down now three large syndicates in three weeks that we have not been able to do in over four years of intense investigation. Also, why is it your new friend here, who is not a police officer, has been there with you? I want to know what’s going on, now.

The inspector looked over at the man in the back seat in the disguise who was slowly nodding yes at him. Okay, the masked stranger replied, Lieutenant, if you could pull over, we may be able to talk privately.

A minute later the lieutenant pulled over at a local park and went to the end of the parking lot. He looked in the rear view mirror at the hooded man.

The man then took off his disguise. Lieutenant, My name is Carl. That’s all I am going to tell you with regards to my name.

Are you with the Feds? asked the Lieutenant.

First off, Sir, I’ll let you know, I have total discretion as to who or how much I mention about my role here. Now before I go any further, I need to ask. How much do you want to put away these syndicates?

A lot, we have enough regular street crime to keep us all busy.

Okay then, well, I was sent here to help out an old colleague, Matthew here. To cut to the chase, I guess you could say that I have an ability to see things others don’t.

And how do you do that? the Lieutenant asked doubtfully.

I will tell you, but if you disclose what I am about to say to anyone, we will deny any knowledge of this case and we will be out of here faster than you can get out the next sentence. The alibi will remain the same either way. That is, that you have inside informants who must stay anonymous. Also, if you keep what I am about to say secret, you will have many resources from the federal government to strengthen your cases.

The lieutenant paused for a few seconds, then responded. You have my word.

Carl and the inspector looked at each other in acknowledgement, then Carl explained, Lieutenant, have you ever heard of the Cane experiments?

You mean that kind of astral projection, distant viewing type thing. Yah, I heard of it, but I also heard that stuff was all phony.

Well, most people believe that, and there certainly are probably some charlatans out there, but I am living and non-living proof of the existence of at will OBE’s. Actually, what I can do is different from what is commonly known as astral projection. It borders on the unknown and indescribable.

The lieutenant, with his eyes wide open, listened with intent as Carl went on. In the case of the Don we just busted back there. I tracked him the last two weeks. I was in the room when he made the call to confirm the receipts on the drug shipments, which he liked to refer to as plumbing cleaner. The receipts were in his hand. He also had similar receipts that he would separate at times then put back together by date of shipment. After observing all the documents, and how slow he signed the ones with some of the cargo in question, a signature pattern became apparent. Finally, last Saturday, it was confirmed after he showed three of those particular receipts to one of his henchmen and mentioned that they were big drug shipments. Now, there were also many other shipments of legitimate goods to help throw off any suspicion. But this time, we were certain that we had some real drug shipments to track.

But didn’t you bust him for murder? the lieutenant inquired.

"Yes, I was getting to that point. Then yesterday, just when I was going to leave his office, he made another call, this one sounded rather unpleasant, in which he mentioned about trimming away some pesky brush. Since there was no brush around the lodge, I took this as some sort of buzz term and decided to stay longer. Donno then took off with his friends there and met Mr. Candor on the corner of Dutton and Grant. After they got him in the car, they drove off. At first, it sounded like they were trying to recruit him into working for them, but as they approached Mount Halmus, it quickly became apparent
