I went out for dinner last night to my favourite Chinese restaurant and got the cheesiest fortune in my cookie - The rubber bands are all heading in the right direction.
What the heck does that mean?
In my experience, fortune cookie messages have always predicted my future or offered me some enlightened idea about life's mysteries, calling to mind the sayings of Confucius or the feel-good ideas of Buddha. Sometimes they even contain thought-provoking nuggets of wisdom. But more often the fortunes inside the cookies just make you scratch your head. Let’s delve into the mysterious little cellophane-wrapped packages we call fortune cookies.

The History of the Fortune Cookie
Fortune cookies are an American creation, not Chinese as most people assume. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a fortune cookie in China.
The cookie’s invention is widely debated as many sources claim to be the creator of the fortune cookie. The unofficial official origin (if that makes sense) as established by a mock court in 1993 in San Francisco, California, is that the fortune cookie was invented by Makoto Hagiwara. Hagiwara was a Japanese immigrant who designed the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and served fortune cookies there starting in the early 1900s.
Other claimants of the cookie invention include David Jung, founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company in Los Angeles, and Chinese railway workers in the 1800s.
Fortune Cookie Sayings
The following fortune cookie sayings are written as they appeared on the little white slips of paper. While some make no sense and you probably think I should have used a better spell and grammar checking tool, I assure you this is how the messages looked in the cookies.
