Introduction
I want to share with you how I believe I was able to experience something phenomenal and if my findings appeal to you, there’s no harm in you trying them out for yourself. I don’t purport to have all the answers; in fact, I’m learning more every day, but I have undoubtedly experienced a kind of shift within and the following pages document what I believe this shift is attributed to. I feel like I can see things so much more clearly now. It is my hope that after sharing these experiences and coping tactics with you, perhaps you too will also see things a whole lot more clearly and improve all aspects of your life tremendously.
I’m not sure when exactly it happened, or which of the following events or actions were most responsible for this remarkable turnabout, but I do know it is the most liberating and fabulous feeling and I’m going to try to hold onto it for as long as I can – for as long as I live, preferably.
No pills, no spiritual awakening, no new love, no winning lotto ticket to buy all my heart desires; nothing like that. It’s much more complicated, yet quite simple. I know this seems a bit confusing and contradictory, but read on and you will understand.
Generally, I’m a positive and happy person with a love for life and people, which is obviously to be expected of a successful motivational author. However, I’m only human and don’t wake up every day with the joys of spring and not a worry or care in the world. I’m sure most of you can relate to this.
You see, I used to be quite a highly-strung, excitable person who could get worked up really quickly. People and situations would affect me deeply, upsetting me and making me angry, worried or anxious. On top of this, I would often put a lot of pressure on myself as well as allow others to put pressure on me. As a result, I was regularly highly stressed and I suffered from frequent migraines for most of my life (from the age of five).
At the time of writing this, I haven’t had a migraine for close on two years and my aim is to never have one ever again. I can’t remember when last I was really angry or upset within the last year (another breakthrough for me) and overall, I’m just a far more relaxed and happy person.
Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t unhappy before, but I experienced many highs and lows and often battled or had to work really hard to achieve the balance I would tell people about in my previous books. What I have always strived for is a well-adjusted balance in my life and now I believe that is exactly what I have achieved – and let me tell you, it’s life-changing. When almost nothing can stress you out and you can remain even-keeled in practically any situation, your world will become a monumentally better place where goals become achievable and happiness no longer evades you. When you have the power to remain calm in stormy waters, you can achieve amazing things.
Your journey to self-discovery and change has just begun. I urge you to carefully read this book from beginning to end and then to go back and re-read chapters that particularly appeal to you and relate to your life and situation. Most importantly, apply what you learn from these chapters to your life.
Chapter 1
But my neighbour has…
To be content is bliss.
It seems a new-age disease that most of us suffer from in silence or in loud protest is dissatisfaction. Never satisfied with what we have, we look to our neighbour who always seems to have more or better. Many would argue that you need to feel dissatisfied with your lot in order to strive ambitiously for more. I tend to disagree. To be dissatisfied and compare yourself to others who have more of what you believe you want, who look better or seem happier, is a negative emotion that can be likened to envy, jealousy and lack of self-esteem – all very negative states. Yes, it’s good to set goals and strive to reach them but not because you want what others have but rather because you have a clear idea of what you want from your life (your dreams and aspirations) and are determined to achieve them.
The reasons for your striving to achieve are what’s important
If your reasons for striving to achieve are to get more so you can live up to the image you’ve created for your neighbours and live up to the expectations of your social circle, then you need to rethink things carefully.
The thing is, if you are succeeding due to your desire to have what others have, you will never be happy or satisfied. You see, there will always be those with more than you – more money, a better job, more handsome or pretty than you, a better-looking spouse, more friends and so on. If you are constantly looking at your neighbour and comparing your life to theirs, there will always be something that they have that seems better to you. For a change, instead of comparing yourself to those around you who have more than you, why not compare yourself to the countless people all over the world who have so much less than you. You often don’t have to look very far to find numerous people who would give anything to
