Author's Biography
The Touch
Last night I had the same dream. In it I saw a beautiful female face with flowing red hair. Then something painful happened and I awoke. It has troubled me as I can never picture her when I awake and, as usual, I could not recall most of the dream. This has happened for many years now. Sometimes a year would go by and nothing and then it would start again. But, I had to get it out of my mind! It was Monday 10:00 a.m., I had rewritten the C # programming code over at least 10 times this morning. Still the sub-miniature, DARPA laser transceiver on my roof was failing to properly identify the Chinese antimissile satellites it had been carefully tracking from
my suburban home.
My head was pounding, my eyes were burning and I needed a break. The last four hours had passed like minutes, as it always did, when I was hypnotized by a fascinating challenge; but, the stress was too much! I knew that John Stone would arrive in 6 hours expecting a progress report and there was no great progress. Tension with the Chinese had been growing over oil supplies and my creative skills were in hot demand. This could also be defined as stress. The old leather couch, away from the computer, looked really good; I needed to take a break.
As I sat down, the SkypeD whistled at me with the sound I had always used to call my dog Mitsy. I liked to think about her as she was my best friend for nearly 12 years when I was in elementary school. As I turned to look at its 12 inch horizontal golden saucer, materializing above it, in the ion mist, was Bessie's beautifully sculpted, smiling, face and long red hair, floating over her alabaster shoulders. I eagerly said, Accept call.
The SkypeD came to life and Bessie's smiling image turned towards me as my image appeared before her. It always make my heart pound to see her red hair swirl and float in the air surrounding her as if it were an aura. Bessie's emerald green eyes found me and the smile drowned out half my pain. She said, Janr you promised to come by for a massage yesterday and yet you never called. I know you are working too hard and need a rest so I am calling you. My 10:30 a.m. appointment cancelled, would you like to take it?
I could not believe my luck; it was just what the doctor ordered. I said, Bessie I will be there in no time.
I threw her a kiss and told the SkypeD to disconnect.
I ran up from the basement lab to the 3rd floor and grabbed my red and black leather warrior riding clothes, boots and gloves and headed for the garage. It was a cool morning so I had to warm up the Yamaha cruiser before the engine would run off choke. It still smelled funny, from the winter in the garage, as it warmed up and burned away dust and God knows what that had accumulated. Minutes later I was screaming down Shotgun Hill Road heading for Carmel and hoping not to get a ticket. The cool air rushing through my helmet vents filled my lungs with the first floral scents of spring. April was indeed a great month to live in upstate New York. Some people would not consider riding a bike relaxing, but near 10:00 a.m. with all the kids in school and the rushing mom's in the SUV's off the road, it was reasonably safe to relax and enjoy the beauty of the small mountain and its green valleys. With that in mind, I did slow down.
I arrived at Bessie’s Carmel office at 10:25 a.m. and parked easily on the street by her storefront. Bessie had been a casual friend for over 18 years. Though I never dated her, after losing my wife Judy 14 years ago, I often thought it might not be a bad idea. Something however held me back and I ended up marrying Nancy who I had known since college. Nancy was a great wife and good friend. She has been visiting her family in Florida for just 3 days now and I truly missed her company. Sometimes it bothered me that Bessie had so strong an effect on me. I couldn't quite figure it out. Like most men I liked looking but knew not to touch. I did not want to ruin the great thing I had been given in my love for Nancy.
I sat in the small waiting room on the very comfortable soft lavender couch. With the curtains drawn across the storefront windows, there was this immediate feeling of exclusion from the world's stress. I had selected the couch, as from it you could watch the softly illuminated, blue waterfall. It would tumble down the wall into the miniature pond and I could listen to its soft murmuring song. The combination of blues and lavender reminded me of a sunset and I suspected that Bessie designed it that way to help people relax. Bessie always had Prasad Celestial incense burning somewhere in the background. Today was no exception as the slowly turning ceiling fan wafted this magical aroma down from above. The room was softly lit by electric candles that looked so real people often waved their hands over them to see if they could feel the heat.
Just then a tall, well built blonde lady stepped out from behind the beaded curtains and Bessie followed to greet me with a big smile of perfectly symmetrical pearl white teeth. She was surprisingly strong for a 5 foot tall masseuse of somewhat fragile build. Bessie’s long red hair was up in a bun but did not look severe, her emerald green eyes were soft and warm and and her lightly freckled fair skin was not unhealthy. For 55 years old, she was apparently quite fit. I told myself, her appearance had nothing to do with my being there; It was her touch that cured my pain, not her looks. Thanks to her soft tissue massage my back was no longer possessed by a mad dog who relentlessly clung to my flesh and bones with its snarling teeth. I did not go to her regularly for pampering as the wealthier clients did, I just went for relief. Today was such a day; though I wondered how she knew to call me as she did today and had on many occasions before.
Forty five minutes later, when I left, I felt like I had just awakened refreshed from a long night’s worry free sleep. Something I am not sure I had ever experienced in reality.
I stopped for lunch at China Star, a little out of the way but well worth it. Today I was going to sit at one of the small tables and relax. Mike made the best Kung Pao chicken anywhere and no matter what you ordered, it was always ready in under 10 minutes.
By 1:00 p.m. I was back at work on the code but this time with new ideas that had come to me on the bike ride home. At 2:00 p.m. I had my first perfect satellite ID. Over the next 2 hours I refined the code until it was flawless.
