    Cassie

    The library has always been my safe haven. Something about its quietness, the smell of old and new books, and the ceiling-high stacks of books from all walks of life, always give me the comfort of a home.

    It’s been the rock I’ve leaned on for the past 20 years.

    Lately, though I’ve come to question if the reason I feel so connected to it is not the job but the people. And by people I mean John Drisk, the Direct and my mentor. He’s always been there for me, for the happy times and the not-so-happy ones.

    John and his lovely wife, Trisha, have taken me into their family and treated me more as a daughter than an employee. Granted, our small library is staffed with a handful of people, it’s impossible not to feel close to everyone. But I still felt a little bit more cozy with the two of them.

    And today is a day I’ve been dreading since the beginning of the year. Five months have passed and I still can’t believe John will be retiring and a new face is taking his place.

    John has called a meeting to introduce the new Director this evening. He’s from Miami. John is very impressed with him and his plan on how to make our library even better, with community events and upgrades. On paper, he sounds great. The reality is he won’t be the gentleman I’ve come to love and trust.

    As the clock ticks the minutes away and the doors close for the public, a wave of nervousness takes over my senses, causing my palms to sweat, my heart palpitations to increase, and heavy breathing become a thing.
