About this ebook
Jamal King has been on a life-long journey – a conquest of sorts – to discover exactly what it means to be truly “free” in such a non-gay world and to find at least one other human being as proud and “free” as he. In a bold and uncharacteristic move, he sets out to confront his bubbling overflow of questions for straight-up answers.
With the help and support of his best-friend, Kendra Smith, Jamal launches Curriculum; a group/forum type of platform where he along with other members of the community could discuss issues of the black gay community and bring about some understanding. It only takes a hot minute for Jamal to come to grips with his own reality, to learn that his idea of freedom and truth is not universal, and to understand that for some – like Damien Carter, Jr., Jamhar Brown, Daphne, and Simon – one size does not fit all.

Lola’s Cafe
Can I have him, well done, all the way with cheese, extra fries, and a coke please?
Kendra said as she sat down at the table with Jamal. The young male waiter smiled as he walked away.
Sorry boo,
Jamal replied raising his eye brows and shaking his head then took a drink of his lemon water. He waited for Kendra’s expression of awe – mouth wide open in surprise – then he smiled.
Man dang. Nah uh!
she said. You lying. I know you lying.
Jamal just continued to shake his head. Kendra usually didn’t show this much resistance to the truth. Look. I’m telling you boo,
he said.
Mmph, mmph, mmph…it’s a shame,
she said. I hate when you do that. Hell don’t even tell me next time. I’m like Adele from that movie, The Queens of Comedy, now. Why you wanna fuck up my last few days? Shit, just buy a bitch a pizza and surprise a hoe.
They both exploded in laughter.
It was the side of Kendra that Jamal had loved since the day their friendship first ignited some 12 years ago; that and the fact that she had come to trust his judgments and visions without question – aside from her usually comic displays of disbelief and frustration when it was something she wanted.
I’m sorry love,
Jamal said. But you know I can’t let you go down them roads. Especially when I know they are going to be dead ends.
I feel you,
she said making a sad face. It’s just that it seems like everybody is like that. I mean everywhere we go you are having to stop me in my tracks.
You know what I always say don’t you.
Yea, yea, yea. Some crazy, crazy mess about everybody being gay until proven otherwise.
How you doin’!
he came back in his Resputia voice and moving his head the same way her character did it in the movie, Norbit. At that moment the young male waiter had returned to their table. He placed the coffee mug nestled tightly in its matching colored saucer in front of Jamal.
You guys are having too much fun. Can I join in?
the young waiter said. Kendra gave the fakest chuckle she could muster.
You sure can,
she said to him patting the seat next to her with her hand. You sure can.
Ah man. I wish I could,
the young waiter replied. He looked over to Jamal. Well Mr. King, here is the caramel Brule latte you ordered with extra whipped cream and caramel pieces. Is there anything else that I can—
Umm yes please,
Kendra said. I would like a cheeseburger, well-done, all the way, with fries and a coke please.
And how about for you, Mr. King,
the young male waiter said facing Jamal. Kendra rolled her eyes and pretended to dig in her bag-of-a-purse for something.
No sir. I think I’m good,
Jamal said. Thank you.
No problem. And ma’am I will return with your order in just a few minutes.
Thank you so much boo,
Kendra replied still digging through her purse keeping her head buried.
Girl you ought to be ashamed,
Jamal said to her. Being so ugly to that baby.
What did I do?
she replied smiling. Child she will be alright. Oops, I mean he.
You wrong for that girl,
he said before taking a nice, long sip of his latte.
He gently placed his mug back on its saucer and with his right hand reached down into his business tote pulling out the suede tan-colored pad folio he had treated himself to the Christmas before.
Bloop, bloop, bloop. I guess it’s time for business then,
Kendra said grabbing her bag from out of the
