I got back to my apartment later that evening to find a heap of mail waiting for me on the doormat. I hadn't realised just how long it had been since I'd set foot in here. With a bedroom in Elliot's mansion always waiting for me, there hadn't been much reason to come home. But I didn't want to go back to Elliot's tonight. I couldn't face it.

I gathered up the mail and forced myself to look through it, but every line of print was a meaningless blur. Even a letter addressed in my mother's handwriting couldn't stir me enough to open it. What was I going to do? Stay with Elliot and wait for Marcia to destroy his reputation and ruin his life, or say goodbye to the man I loved and go back to opening letters alone in my apartment? Could I do that to him? Make him give up so much for my sake?

I knew it wasn't my fault. I'd stopped thinking like that now. This was all down to Marcia and her cruel desire to hurt Elliot. But even so, if I stayed with him I'd still have to live with the knowledge that I'd changed his life forever, knowing I could've made things different. I dropped the stack of letters and buried my face in my hands, blinking back tears as the setting sun began to cast my apartment into darkness. If only there was some way I could fix this.
