Till Death Do Us…
How could two birds live happily
Remain together; eternally
Without a holy matrimony
While you’re my wife to be
yet you can’t stand me?
Love brought us together
Till death do us part
But it wasn’t death that made you depart
You took my heart
broke it apart
And left the pieces in the dark
Said the world tempted you
The many options haunted you
Made you realize that you could never love me
Even when you sincerely wanted to.

Intro - Devvy’s Monologue
You know, it was the strangest of things how Terrence and I actually started going out. When I first met Terrence, it was so weird. We were in this earth science class where he used to sit right beside me for almost a year right, but we never actually spoke to one another. I mean, okay he was fine, plus he was one of the smartest kids in the class, and half of the girls in the school liked him even though he acted like a nerd sometimes. I thought he was cute and all, but I didn’t think he even noticed me, if anything I thought he liked this girl named Sylvia. They used to call her princess, I don’t know why though. Terrence was always staring at her. Sylvia was definitely too fast for him though— those two wouldn’t have lasted a week together.
So anyway, one day I had the flu, so I couldn’t come to school right? and when I came the next day I asked him to borrow his notes, the boy pulled out two sheets of papers with the notes that he had copied for me, I was like —so shocked! I thought that was so sweet of him. Ever since then we became friends, and next thing you know we were like best friends —and then, well here we are today. It’s like me and Terrence just clicked since that day. It was so unbelievable. I mean here’s this cutie, brown-coco brother who could probably have gotten
with any other girls that he wanted from the school, but yet he chose me. Me! the shy, tall and skinny girl from Springfield High—I wasn’t that skinny though, I mean even then I still had a big chest.
When I think about it sometimes it amazes me, even today, after those long and joyous six years that we’ve been together. Of course a lot changed since those Springfield High years. I mean look at me now, not only I have gained about thirty extra pounds; and mind you all in the right places too, so that was a big plus for me, but I’ve definitely grown as well — physically, mentally, sexually, and emotionally. Sometimes I think back and I wonder how the heck did I get here you know, I mean it seems like a natural process, but I think it was more like an adaptation to my environment. I would have never imagined that a simple physical growth could have had such a major impact over my life. Actually now that I think about it, the fact that Terrence has been by my side through thick and thin also helped me keep my head up, especially during my senior year. It was like every freaking thing was going wrong. My whole life went to a drastic turn around. My older brother got killed by some frigging racist cops. My father died of pneumonia—shit, everything was just fucked up.
Before Terrence came in my life, I never really made a big deal about boys. Sure I had one or two boyfriends, but that was like kids’ stuff —plus I couldn’t pay a fellow to notice me, let alone try and talk to me back then. I think that’s why I am so in love with this man, I mean he’s the light of my life, my shining star; my everything. But he got some major minuses though, I mean major; like the man simply can’t last more than five minutes in bed. I mean literally five minutes— what the hell is that? At first it was okay, because I guess I didn’t know any better, so I thought okay maybe that’s how it was supposed to be, and then when my girls started telling me how so and so was going at it all night long, I was shocked—Like God what the hell is wrong with my man? We tried medicines, but he refuses to go to therapy, I guess that’s that pride thing, which I understand but lord my savior I am young, I am strong, and I gots to have it all night long.
I – Club Nights
It nearly took twenty minutes of going in circles around the village area before Terrence finally found a parking spot. Driving around the Washington square area, not too far from NYU main campuses was so frustrating that it would make the subway feel like a blessing from the skies. Leaving home earlier didn’t really make too much of a difference because of the traffic on his way from Queens to the city, and then there was the parking issue around that area. So, overall, he only had two options, which were to drive around until he found a safe spot where his car wouldn’t get towed, or go to private parking lot, but Terrence wasn’t trying to dish out the thirty bucks that it would have cost him.
Checkers lounge and nightclub was normally insane from Thursday onto Saturdays, and that was normally during a regular week. His friend Will warned him that it was going to be bananas tonight because of the long week end. Terrence would have been better off taking the E-train like Will suggested, but the whole public transportation thing didn’t’ really sit well with him. Just the thoughts of those rats infested subway stations gave him the chills sometimes. Terrence would never get on the train unless he absolutely had no other choices. The truth is, he was the type of guy who would much rather spend a fortune paying a taxi cab, if he couldn’t find a ride to or avoid the function altogether instead using mass transportation. Really, the man would make all sorts of excuses; from claiming that he was cluster phobic, to him not wanting so many strange-looking, foul smelling, people standing so close to him, or fearing that he will get pulverize by some oversized woman who’s going to squeeze her huge-self to seat next to him.
Luckily Terrence was able to park just a few blocks away from the nightclub. By the time he made it through the security and the coat check at club entrance it was already eleven thirty PM. Will and company had been expecting him for over an hour now. Dressed to impress as usual; Terrence entered the nightclub wearing black shoes, his favorite pair of gray pants, a white shirt and a black jacket which appeared like it was glowing when he walked by the black lights. He thought about wearing a tie, but decided to lose it at the last minute. Terrence liked the ‘suit and tie’ look and believed it separated the men from the mice, although none of it would be relevant tonight because he was going to be with his friend Will, and therefore knew for a fact that unless he was on a date, Will always had at least two girls hanging out with him.
Terrence wanted to bring Devvy with him of course, but knowing how Will talked and acted around females, it simply wouldn’t have been a good idea, especially at a place like Checkers where they would most likely be drinking. Initially Devvy was supposed to think about it, but changed her mind at the last minute and told him that she had to wake up early. Terrence didn’t sweat it the least because he knew that she wasn’t much into the club scene, or anything that seemed too social for that matter. The only reason he himself came out tonight was because he was trapped after he lost a bet to Will. He couldn’t believe it when the New York Knicks got swept by the Miami Heat during the first round of the NBA playoffs.
It almost seemed as if the entire club was suddenly sparked up when Terrence entered Checkers, which was somewhat bigger than the average clubs that he usually frequented.
Checkers was much more than a simple nightclub; it was a cross between a club, a lounge and a casino, which is why it attracted such a diversified crowd from all races, ages and backgrounds. As he walked pass by the pool tables he noticed an old acquaintance who quickly greeted him.
What up T.
the gentlemen nodded with a thuggish grin.
Yo-yo, What up
he waved his head and nodded back to the gentlemen. There wasn’t much else to say they both understood exactly what it meant.
While he would make an occasional bet on a sporting event here and there, Terrence wasn’t much of a gambler, so he felt somewhat out of place in that section of the club but he was still he was checking out a few tables as he continued to make his way into the clubs when suddenly, an unfamiliar face that he couldn’t recall ever meeting jumped in front of him.
You’re Terrence, right?
she asked with a bright smile on her face. Terrence didn’t exactly know what to say as he strangely stared at her and her glowing smile, wondering who the hell she was.
Maybe; who are you?
He reluctantly blurted out. The girl had the brightest Kool-Aid smile on her face to the point where she resembled a toothpaste walking billboard.
Hey I am Cindy; I am here with your friend Will
she smiled as she politely extended her left hand towards Terrence.
Oh, yeah-yeah I am sorry I didn’t recognize you. It’s good to be careful nowadays you know
Terrence apologetically explained with a smile while shaking her hand.
I know what you mean
She giggled, but really was already thinking to herself whether or not Terrence could be her prey tonight. Will mentioned that he was a cool brother, but Damn this brother
