As I flipped through an Australian newspaper someone left on a cafeteria table, it dawned on me how I would pay my university tuition for the next two and a half years; I would sell my virginity. A woman in Australia had gone on a reality TV show and sold hers for $750,000 US. If I even got a fraction of that, I could continue my education.

My parents were killed in a car crash the day before I graduated high school. After their estate was settled and my sister got her half, I was left with just enough to cover my university expenses for one year. I’ve been working two jobs since the day after the funeral but I am still not going to be able to pay for next year despite the small grant I received. Dropping out was not an option; I had no alternative but to figure out a way to come up with the money. Now I had.

I Googled the Australian lady and learned more about her story. She and a guy who claimed to be a virgin had both gone on the reality show in a quest to auction off their virginity (separately, not together.) The lady had to provide proof of her virginity in the form of a doctor’s examination and confirmation. The guy had no way to prove that he was a virgin so his top bid was $3,000. As prostitution is illegal in Australia and the show’s producers didn’t want the virgin or the Japanese businessman who ‘purchased’ her virginity to be arrested, the duo planned to rendezvous on his private plane in an undisclosed location. It sounded like a fair trade to me.

The more I pondered the idea, the more I liked it. I had no concerns about the doctor’s exam. I’ve had a couple of semi-serious boyfriends and while there was some heavy making out, I’d never loved any guy enough to let him get into my pants. I had some concerns about the pimping myself out aspect of it. Even though it was only one time, I was selling myself. But knowing that one night with someone would enable me to get the university degree that would help me for the rest of my life eased my misgivings.

I knew I wouldn’t change my mind about selling my virginity so I researched the best international website to post my ad on. An hour later I narrowed my search to one site and registered for a free account. I noticed a whole section of women that were offering escort services or full-release massages but didn’t see any postings about losing your virginity.

Wasting no time, I wrote up my ad and posted it:

I uploaded a picture of myself taken last summer at the lake. I thought it showed off my figure pretty well; my years on the swim team in high school and the nonstop yoga since my parents’ death has finally paid off for something.

I set the deadline for the end of the month, which was 24 days away. I debated for a long time on what to set the minimum bid at. I didn’t want to make it too high
