    The Swinging Experiment

I wasn’t surprised when my husband, Damian, strolled into the kitchen and asked if I would be willing to give swinging a try.

Damian had mentioned swinging countless times over the past month. Hey, honey, look at these swinging statistics. Swinging is on the rise, he’d said once. Hey, Amy, this article on swinging mentions that most couples report that swinging enhances their relationship, he’d shared over breakfast one morning. And last night as we snuggled in bed: Honey, did you know that most people who try swinging are in happy marriages, not unhappy ones? That’s interesting, don’t you think? The list of times he’d mentioned swinging went on and on.

I never said much when Damian made swinging comments. He always took his time building up to something. I knew he’d eventually tell me what was on his mind. That time arrived moments ago when Damian had asked, Honey, what do you think about us trying out the swinging lifestyle?

I’d known the question was coming but I played dumb. Swinging? As in partner swapping?

Yes! Let me show you something. Damian pulled out his phone and clicked on an app. "This is called Swinging Door. It shows all the couples within a 30-mile radius that are looking for swingers at this very moment. Look at these two for example: Patty and Jim. Biracial couple looking for a fun time. Toys supplied. Or we have Caroline and Joseph: We are into light bondage. Hope you are too!

There really was an app for everything. Interesting, I replied.

There are dozens of couples at this moment who are looking for swinging couples.

So, we just go to their houses? I asked.

The addresses are listed below the bios. I’ve read over the rules. We go to their house and if they have a red porch light on, they are still available. If the light is off, they’ve changed their mind, or another couple beat you to them. Then you go to the door and knock. It’s as simple as that apparently. Once inside, the four people decide to go ahead with the swing or go their separate ways.

Huh. Even sex is technological these days, I observed.

No, the sex isn’t. That’s still flesh and bone. Just the means to connect with other couples is.

    Good point. So what now?

Damian shrugged. If I didn’t know him so well, the shrug would look nonchalant. But since I knew his nuances as well as anyone could know their spouse’s quirks, I could tell this conversation was important to him.

If I were honest with myself, I’d admit the idea was appealing. One of my coworkers was an avid swinger. The stories she shared of her and her husband’s escapades always sounded exciting. Okay, let’s give it a try, I said.

Damian’s eyes opened wider than those of a kid on Christmas morning. Really? he asked, clearly stunned that I agreed.

    Really.

When do you want to give it a try?

It doesn’t matter to me, I said. When do you want to try?

Um, uhm, why not tonight? Damian suggested.

Sure, okay. We had nothing planned other than watching the new Bruce Willis movie; that could wait for tomorrow. I want to shower and change first.

Me, too. But you go ahead and shower first. I’ll shower while you are getting dressed.

I moved for the stairs. Damian grabbed my hand as I passed him. Thanks for doing this with me,
