Peter Allchin

I have been writing for quite a few years - short stories; poetry, and two novels, one of which was published in Australia in paperback in 2007. Owing to unforeseen problems, the book is no longer available. I have also been published in magazines, although my style of writing - usually, but not always, black comedy and horror, is not for women's mainstream magazines. I also write poetry, preferring rhymes rather than free verse. And rhymes, as opposed to 'proper' poetry, is something I love to write, especially simple, silly verses, many of which are suitable for young children. I write because I enjoy creating something out of what might be an acorn of just a few words, or a phrase that came to me, or overheard in a conversation.

    The Room of Ambiguity

Jason hears a noise coming from the far side of the small but dimly lit room - just one low-powered light-bulb hanging from the center of the ceiling, giving a ghost-like glow to its surroundings. In one corner of the room, is a chair. A small table is nearby. Set into the wall, between table and chair, is a door. He does not know what is behind the door. Maybe it will take him back to... but the memory of what lay before these past moments, is not there. Why am I here, he asks himself. Am I in some kind of dream? Jason notices that the door is plain and smooth - no handle or doorknob.

He tiptoes towards the door and listens - everything is quiet. The quietness, contrary to all belief, is deafening. Jason clasps his hands over his ears. Even his thoughts echo around the room. His mind is in turmoil. He is about to turn around when suddenly, there is a tap on the door. Lowering his hands, Jason reaches out in an effort to turn the tap on, but a voice inside his head keeps telling him that he is a happily married
