About this ebook
Settling in after the flurry of activity involved in our move to France we started to take stock of our local community discovering almost immediately that there were two distinct groups in the area, the French and the British. We were to be surprised how much amusement this engendered, particularly with regard to the curious behaviour of some of our compatriots. Visitors, entertained by our accounts, suggested that our experiences merited publication. This book is the result, introducing you initially to situations which often seemed to us ‘stranger than fiction’.
Margaret Christopher
Margaret Christopher lives in the Charente Department of France with Nina, her dog and five cats. Her major interests are gardening, observing the local scene and of course writing, the latter conveniently taking up much of the time which she should be devoting to housework!

About the author
In 1993 Margaret Christopher and her husband Paul took early retirement from teaching, shed their mortgage by selling their, by then, fully restored thatched cottage and bought an old stone farmhouse to renovate in the Charente Department of France. With them came their two German Shepherd dogs and five rescued cats.
In between helping with the restoration, concrete laying becoming her forte, her love of gardening enabled her, with Paul’s help, to develop an extensive decorative garden and productive ‘potager’ on the one and a half hectare site.
During the years which have followed she has kept a daily diary. This has not only catalogued their day to day progress but also some of the more entertaining – sometimes bizarre - antics of the local communities, both French and British.
In these initial excerpts, after introducing herself, she explores the joys and otherwise of welcoming visitors
