Gold medal winner in the Readers' Favorite Awards for Paranormal Romance!

The daughter of a murdered king must flee to Alaska to survive. Doing all she can to keep her younger sisters safe, Aazuria tries to assimilate and work among the Americans. She tries to hold her head up high even in the lowest of places, until she meets a somber man in a dark corner with eyes that remind her of home.

Trevain Murphy is a successful crab fisherman who has spent his life building an empire on the sea. When a graceful dancer captures his attention, he becomes fascinated with her old-fashioned speech and unique mannerisms. Learning that her father has recently died, he cannot resist extending his kindness in offering to guide and protect her.

As it becomes clear that the dark-haired woman is much more than she seems, Trevain is unprepared to uncover the staggering secrets behind her innocent facade. Neither the captain nor the princess can imagine that their lives will become forcibly entwined as a common enemy threatens both of their worlds...

This is the first book of the Sacred Breath Series.

Trevain Murphy has a great life for the most part. Captain of his own crabbing vessel, Trevain has done very well for himself. Until recently. They lost a member of their crew somehow, and Trevain blames himself. While drowning his sorrow as a local gentlemen's club, he sees the most beautiful dancer ever. She draws him in immediately, and he is determined to meet her. He learns her name is Aazuria, but what he doesn't know is that Aazuria has many secrets. She is the princess of a kingdom of people under the Bering Sea. Trevain will soon find himself caught up in the problems of Aazuria's kingdom, but nothing will top the other secrets he will learn. Trevain's life will be completely altered. This was a very interesting concept. I liked the unique plot points, and there were some definite surprises in store. There are quite a few things I'd love to talk about, but I don't want to spoil things for anyone. The contrast in speaking styles was a great way to highlight the differences in demeanor of the different characters. Aazuria seemed to be a very calm and positive influence on just about everyone she encountered. She had been forced to make a lot of very difficult decisions in her life. I think that both she and Trevain ultimately wanted the same things- to feel complete freedom.I think the highs and lows of Aazuria's and Trevain's relationships did seem a but abrupt at times. I think the development there was just a tiny bit rushed. I mentioned there were a lot of twists and turns, and I didn't see a couple of the things coming even though they were hinted at. This helped me want to keep turning pages to see what would happen next. I'm looking forward to the next book in the adventure. In a world full of paranormal YA books, this one takes a unique and different approach to the genre. I feel like "merpeople" hasn't been done as much. I would have liked to learn more about all the underwater politics; they sounded very complex. Overall, it was a fast and enjoyable read. People who enjoy underwater adventures and a very different romance story should check this one out.Book provided for review.

"Deep under Artic waters lies an ice kingdom carved into a glacier. Those who dwell within it possess magnificient biological secrets. Captain Trevain Murphy is a successful king crab fisherman who has spent his life building his empire above the sea and knows nothing of the empire beneathe it."This book had me from the first page to the last. Aazuria and the rest of the mermaids are so well written you can just close your eyes and picture them. I love the fact that these mermaids don't have fish tales when in the water, and that Aazuria's appearance changes in hair and color of skin when out of water. Trevain is kind and caring and I couldn't help but laugh when he keeps saying that at 50 he is far too old for Aazuria and then again when he finds out that she is in fact 603 years old. There are some unexpected surprises that I really enjoyed. I think this book has something for everybody and I can't wait to read more. I have fallen in love with these mermaids. I received this book from the author through Goodreads.

There are depths of the ocean no one has ever seen, where no human could possibly survive. Or can they? There are places in the ocean that exist only in one’s imagination. Or do they? What if a person has mermaid abilities? What if a person has mermaids in the family but doesn’t know it?In Drowning Mermaids by Nadia Scrieva – book one of the Sacred Breath series – we get to find out the answers to those questions. In this book we follow the life and struggles of Aazuria and her sisters who are living on land despite being better accustomed to living under the ocean waves. There is the fight-to-the-death battle with opposing forces, fisherpersons in grave danger, events and misunderstandings that lead to tragic circumstances. And of course there is the love interest, the impossible dream, the hope for a future worth pursuing.A warning to young readers: unfortunately there is some nasty language in some places and a few suggestive mature scenes, otherwise this would have been a suitable book for them to read.Despite what I mentioned in the above paragraph, and some editing that was missed, Drowning Mermaids is a story depicting strong female characters and a storyline that holds one’s interest. If you ever wondered what it would be like to live under water, or if there are really mermaids in the ocean (or in your family), you may like to read Drowning Mermaids by Nadia Scrieva to find out what one creative author thinks about all that. Experience the fantasy.

Being a huge fan of the TV Show “The Deadliest Catch” (about Alaskan Fisherman), but not one to normally read about a mermaid love story, I was somewhat unsure of what to expect with this novel. But the high-quality writing and gripping narrative enticed me to read along, and I was quickly swept up in a story that far exceeded all my (admittedly modest) expectations! This is an adult novel (not like the mermaid tales for children), filled with a hot romance between two unlikely characters, a war raging unseen to human eyes, and the unexpected adventure of a man who thought the best part of his life was behind him, only to find out it has just begun. I don’t know what I was more impressed with, the superb writing of the author, or her creative genius. Either way this novel gets my hearty recommendation for those who enjoy any type of fantasy, action, drama, or romance novel.

As a guy, mermaid stories aren’t usually on the top of my reading lists. But I am glad I made an exception for this one. This wasn’t the typical tale of the handsome young sailor meets the beautiful, yet helpless young sexy mermaid…Well, okay, she is a sexy, beautiful mermaid, but helpless and young she is not. I appreciated that the Captain was flawed and suffering, and not Mr. Stud muffin perfect. He felt real, as did everyone else which is pretty amazing considering the fantastical world in which they inhibit. I believed wholeheartedly in the fantasy and thought the history, myth, and biological aspects of the mermaids to be extremely clever. I will be interested in reading the next book in this series to see what more the author has in store for us.

What a beautiful and engaging story! I had no idea really what to expect when reading this, only that I had heard it mentioned a few times on Twitter and thought it sounded intriguing. I’m glad I got a copy! I read it in 2 days and was really happy to find out there is a sequel so I can continue on this fantastical journey! Ms. Screvia writes in a way that just reaches out and grabs you and doesn’t let go from start to finish. I imagined all the characters and scenes perfectly and loved every page. Highly recommend to anyone who likes a good, original story!

Seriously, where do I start??I loved this book. LOVED IT!!! My only complaint is that it ended!! I can’t think of another book I’ve read recently that so totally consumed me from the first click of my kindle to the last. SO immersed I was in this magical, fantastical world Ms. Scrieva created, I was devastated (shocked, blown away) when it ended. I think the thing I really liked the best about this book was the way the characters evolved, especially Trevain. His journey really touched me, and it was written with an elegance and grace that is rarely found in many writers these days. Strangely, I didn’t feel as much for Aazuria (I don’t know why…didn’t dislike her, just felt more detached), but she was definitely a good character and played her part well with strength and dignity. There were some moments that I thought she was too stiff or unnatural but it did nothing to take away from the overall appeal of this book. This is an AMAZING start to a series I already love and I can’t wait to read more!!

This is a very imaginatively written narrative in which the author skillfully creates a mythological-like world which shares the setting with a fishing village in present day Alaska. The story portrays the strange relationship between the captain of a crab fishing boat and a mysterious, youthful dancer - a relationship which soon involves the captain in unexpected and fantastic adventures. The first part of the book is very well written and sets the scene, providing intricately detailed background and in depth character development.Much of the action occurs in the second part. Here, occasional bouts of excess wordiness in the narrative and a tendency at times to 'tell' rather than 'show' sometimes diminishes the sense of immediacy, and from time to time leaves the reader somewhat on the outside looking in, almost as if watching a dispassionate reading of the interesting action scenes. But the story itself is unique, told with humor and surprising twists and turns. And it sets the stage for a potentially exciting sequel.

I read the first 75% of this book in one sitting and then took my kindle everywhere with me until I was able to finish it (in between toting the kids around). IT WAS THAT GOOD!! I was completely sucked into the storyline right from the beginning and the writing never felt forced or contrived…it unfolded naturally, just how I like it. I hate it when it’s obvious an author inserts needless drama or descriptions just as page filler…Nadia Scrieva makes every word, every sentence, every paragraph count and pack an emotional punch. There were so many elements of this storyline I enjoyed…romance, danger, action, drama…its hard to pick just one. I will say that I loved that Aazuria was so strong and capable, not the whiny damsel in distress helpless female we see so often these days. And I loved how the mermaids were able to blend in with regular people…I always picture them beneath the sea wearing their seashell outfits, not dancing at the local clubs. But this imaginative tale knocked my fins off and I would LOVE to read the next one ASAP.

I had just sort of lukewarm feelings with this one. I never felt totally sucked in, yet I didn’t dislike it either. The writing style is very good, and the plot of an over-the hill fisherman romancing a 600year old (!) mermaid warrior certainly unique and original. But for some reason I was just unable to totally connect to the characters, and felt that I was held at a distance for much of the action, like it was being told to me instead of me being involved. For me, the first half or so of the book read better than the second, because I felt the interpersonal connections and character development were done with more fluidity and solidarity than the latter parts, which at times I felt were glossed over or hurried. And as much as I wanted, I could never really get behind the “romance” between Trevain and Aazuria, but maybe it was just me. While this particular novel didn’t send me over the moon, I enjoyed it enough to want to read the sequel, especially because judging from the blurb for “Fathoms of Forgiveness” (Sacred Breath #2), it revolves more around Visola, who I found to be a supremely interesting character and I would definitely love to read more about her!

I confess this is my first book about mermaids and I only decided to read it because my friend told me how amazing it was and that I just HAD to read it. Well, she was RIGHT!!! I was completely blown away by this book on several levels!! 1) Ms. Scrieva is clearly a very talented writer with a natural gift for weaving beautiful, sometimes lyrical prose that kept me entranced for hours. 2) The author is HIGHLY creative and imaginative, and intelligently so. The mythos behind the mermaids was unique (at least to me) and perfectly described with and imaginative attention to detail that made me feel like I was really there. I genuinely cared for all the characters (even Trevain, who at first, I admit I was a little worried I wouldn’t connect to). But it is a sign of a great writer who can get you to care about all the characters and feel his/her plight, as they are written to feel so real and not as two dimensional cardboard cutouts. I feel like I could go on and on but you really just have to see for yourself. If you want something that is new, with a fresh voice, stunning characters, vivid and imaginative prose and a compelling plot that keeps you yearning for more then READ THIS BOOK!!!

Not just another fantasy novel—`To me, “Drowning Mermaids” was reminiscent of (if I might be so bold) The Harry Potter novels in the sense that sure, they are books about a boy wizard, but that is just the surface…really, they are really about much, much more. That is how “Drowning Mermaids” was for me. Sure there is the fantasy setting about mermaids and undersea kingdoms and the war…but that was just the setting for a cleverly written, deeply emotional and complex tale that hits many layers with nuance and finesse. The search for redemption and forgiveness, love, loss, desire, strength, weakness. So many themes delicately interwoven into this brilliant and moving plot. I flew through the book so fast I felt like I couldn’t get enough. The more I read, the more I wanted to read. The ending took my breath away and left me hungry for more, and I just HAD to buy the sequel immediately!!! I expect great things from this author in the future and suspect we’ll be hearing more about her.

Wow, how do I even put into words how AWESOME this book was? I am SO happy I found it and am getting the next one RIGHT NOW!! From start to finish I was utterly mesmerized by the beautiful, dangerous and lush world the author created. The love story that unfolds while the underworld kingdom at war beneath the sea is just the tip of the iceberg! What I loved most about this book was that there were a lot of characters And scenes and events, but not once did i feel lost or confused. Nadia Scrieva painted such a vivid and descriptive portrait of each individual character, I really felt like I knew each of them intimately. This is really important to me because nothing irritates me more than reading a book filled with interchangeable and two-dimensional “stock characters”. I totally recommend this book for all fans of the fantasy or action and romance genres. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
