    Preface

The shop was quiet, ominous in its stillness. The bluish light of the streetlights shone through the windows and cast an eerie glow over the strange contents.

Madame Desmarais led me back to the very rear of the shop, out the back door, and into a narrow alley behind the store. It was dark; the light from the street didn't reach back there between the voodoo shop and the store behind it, making everything all the more creepy.

I clung to the side of the building, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the darkness. There was a hollow clink as Madame sat the mason jar down on the pavement. She placed a single candle beside it and lit it with a long match that she struck on the ground.

The alley burst into an amber glow and Madame Desmarais was illuminated in her white dress. I licked my dry lips and took a few faltering steps forward.

I felt Alastor stirring near me, his nervous dread filling the distance between us.

For once, I was just as anxious and unsure as him. I took a deep breath and tried to calm my pounding heart.

Calm down Alastor...Everything is going to be okay…Right?

There is still time to stop this nonsense, he pleaded from nowhere. We could leave this place tonight and go back to our home.

His voice drew me in as it always did, imploring and seductive, but I steeled myself against his tricks.

Alastor, you know that I have to try this...

I could feel his anger surround me, like electricity in the air before a storm, it pushed against me from every direction.

There is no way to go back and repair the past, he warned as he ran an icy, invisible finger down my throat.

I knew he was telling the truth just like I knew that no matter how many lifetimes I lived, I would never be able to forget the sound of his voice saying my name or the look on his face when I pulled the trigger.

Letter from Rebecca Sinclair to Her Husband Lieutenant Alastor Sinclair of

Indiana 13th Regiment Calvary, Company B

    June 10, 1862

    Dearest Alastor,

You left me only yesterday and already I miss you terribly. I know that you have not even reached your regiment yet, but I still pray for your safety and your quick return to me. Is it so selfish of me to want my husband by my side?

I know you want news of what is happening here in Corydon, but I have none. My only thought is I love you, I love you, I love you. Nothing else of my day is of any importance. I know that I should write something else for you, but I can think of nothing but you.

Alastor my darling, I think of you always and even though I long for your safe return, I know in my heart that you will survive this dreadful war. You may think me mad, but I have this overwhelming sense that you will come home to me unharmed. I pray that this is a prediction that comes true.

Throughout the day I have remembered our wedding. Could it be that it was only a mere eight days ago? Was it only two nights ago that we lay together? How can it be such a short time since we were together, but that I miss you so!

I received word today from Kentucky that Atherton was wounded and is to be home by the end of the month. It seems your brother led a charge on foot and was shot through the shoulder, but that it was a clean wound and he will keep the arm. I know that while proud of him, you will be glad to know that he is homeward bound.

News of your brother’s wound sickened me. Though I was happy to know he would be home to his wife soon, I couldn’t help but to envy their impending reunion. I try to be brave my love. I try to hold my head high and make you proud, but my longing for you consumes me. I can think of nothing but you and my love for you. Oh, how I do wish that we were together someplace far away from the war.

It is night now, and I look up at the moon and think of you. I hope that where ever you are, you are looking up at the same night sky and thinking of me as well. Know this my love, I love you and as I sleep I will dream of you and the moment when we can be together again.

I must close now for I am sick with longing. Take care my love and write to me often so that the pain of your absence not be as great. I do not know how else I would be able to bear it.

    Your Loving Wife,

    Becca

    Chapter 1

I sat alone at the Louisville International Airport. It wasn’t yet lunchtime, but a steady flow of people walked past, even a few with half eaten fast food orders in their hands looking neither right nor left, all of them on their way to somewhere and they were in a hurry to get there.

Were they so important that they couldn’t take the time to sit down and actually eat? Where were they all going?

I noticed others walking by in a gentle stroll, as if they had all the time in the world to get to their destination. These travelers looked happier and more relaxed than the frowning people rushing past them.

It was odd how very normal they all looked as they moved about the terminal. What would any of them think if they knew what I was trying to do? How terrified would they be to realize just how thin the line really was between life and death? Would they all look so normal then?

    He can come back...

Those were the exact words of the voodoo Madame. It was those words that I had to focus all of my attention on. Those were the words that changed the possibility of my life. I couldn’t let doubt sway me.

Doubt took the form of Alastor, hovering invisibly near me. As I sat watching people come and go, he kept up a steady stream of complaints and useless threats.

My love, he purred of his secret, only for me, voice. Let us forget this nonsense and go home.

    You
