Puppies Breath - James Aa. Keister

    Chapter One

There is nothing more pure than the rise and fall of life. That first glimpse of a new life being created out of nothing more than two totally different cells coming together in an exploding montage of passion. Or to see someone who has lived a long hard life. Now waiting to take that final ride far beyond the beginnings of time, into a place that some call star dust. Knowing their last and final cry will end as a bliss of peaceful whiteness appears. Both the beginning and the end, Alpha and Omega. Both emerging from darkness into light. One giving breath as the other takes it away. And yet somewhere in the middle, life itself is lived.

Whether good, bad or indifferent. Hoping that somewhere along the way we'll find some sense of self, love and laughter. Trying to learn, what we can, as fast as we can, before something, in some way, ends it all for us. Yet in the beginning, we find total dependency on those around us. So easily influenced. So childish our games we learn to play. Then in the course of that which brings us to a bitter goodbye. We find ourselves playing those games in a grown up way. Until we again can not play them and again become dependent on those around us. At least until we have decided to let go.

Two season's prior a call of games had began in the Fairy fang village. A time when the different fangs had crossed like tangled vines and now the results of all that breeding came upon the clans. There was no waiting some nine months to produce young, as was the old ways, the ways of the humans that once ruled the known world. This is the age of the wolvenhrope...and the lycan could bring forth young in only a few short months. With all the activity that had happened during Macillian's games that was now taking it's course, it was no wonder. Throughout each clan, wails of birthing pains filled the air as young were born. More than in any other known lycan time. And what's further...was the fact that no one knew what would result of this...crossing of breeds. Or what kind of mythical powers may follow.

The children, now half breeds, donned new titles such as, Fairy Feather fangs or forest Fur fangs and the like. Depending on which fang the pup dominated. If it was the Feather fang the pup most looked like, then that name was placed first and the other behind. As pure bred pups were beginning to fade away. Yet there were still those who believed in keeping the fangs pure and never bred outside their own. But as the fangs continued to mix, a flood of pups were born. And they were growing fast. Seemingly dominating the clans. But there was one wolf who was smiling at the prospect.

    Chapter Two

He ran in pacing strides. His message was of importance and he was bringing it to the clans. He was coming from the east and south, where the Forest Felt village lay on the lines of the human trading routes. Those of the Human city north of the Forest Felt village to those deeper in the south, past the paw print sign that divided the lands. Seems that the Forest fang leaders son, Karmis had traveled with an army of wolventhropes to the south to help aid in a battle between human and lycan. And on his return, he had told tales of the war and it's outcome. Now Darryl, the Forest fang messenger was on his way to the Fairy fang village to relay the message to the Fairy fang leader Macillian that the human and lycan war in the south, had been won. By the lycan. And even though the humans had their weapons of old and their lost technology...it was not enough to save them. But under Karmi's rule of the war...his mercy had spread wide and he allowed the women, children and elders of the human race to live. Any and all men who fought, were killed as casualties of war. He allowed them to continue their trades to the north with safe passage. Other than any unprovoked attacks by the Fury fangs that could not be controlled, they were allowed to travel the old human routes, unscathed.

And as Darryl paced on, he had begun to notice that their was movement to his right. With a quick glance, he noticed that he was being paced by Fury fangs. He made a quick glance to his left...nothing. He saw a large crop of trees just yards ahead and knew that the Fury would use that to their advantage and try to close in on him. But he had a trick all his own. As soon as he got to the thick crop of trees and was out of sight, he spun to the left and back south, away from the Fury. And by the time they made the edge of the trees, he would be at least a quarter mile from them. Hopefully losing them. Darryl knew that the Fury weren't out to stop his message, they were out hunting and he became their prey. So he had no anger against them. He just needed to out smart and out pace them and lose them enough to make it to his destination. This game of cat and mouse was just part of his job as a messenger. That's why he trained hard and prepared his body to go the miles. He continued on south and turned back toward the west. If he had too, he would simply follow the Morning lake shore line up toward the village then head in from there. He could not smell the Fury nor see them, so he pushed on, slowing his pace a little to help conserve energy. He still had at least another two maybe three hour run to make the Fairy Fang village. Having to back track of course...did not help.

    Chapter Three

It's been quite a time...has it not?" Torno asked his Alpha elder Macillian.

It has! Macillian nodded. But I do admit and wonder...was it the right thing to do? Bringing all these clans together. Seems that I have only helped to muddle things up a bit. Don't you think? He said. Staring over at Torno.

    I can't say sir.

Or won't! Macillian raised his brows. Was it not your daughter that lead us to discuss this issue with the elders? The leader asked.

Yes sir. It was. And now that she has given us a grandson, whom we love and adore, I really can't say that it was all that bad. Torno had to admit. After all, his daughter, being a Fairy fang female, had matched and mated with a Feather fang male and the two had given Torno a beautiful grandson whom he named...Zany, after an old human word for clown. Just because the child loved to romp and play, he was a little clown.

Well, Macillain said, Just stay on top of him. We still don't know the effects, all this is going to have. Nor if he'll ever have any special abilities. He explained to Torno. Such as the Feather fang girl...Rachi.

Isn't she still under watchful eye? Torno asked.

Her every move. But as of lately...seems that she has. Macillian had to stop and think of the right phrase to say. Ceased her activities.

What do you mean? Torno queried.

From what word I've gotten from Billup. She has stopped her tales of fable and has not been seen with the village pups for a long time. She stays hidden away and only comes out to eat and sleep. Even Billup, her father, wonders about her. But Kenti of the Forest fang still has men watching her. Macillian said.

Hm! That is strange. Torno frowned.

Regardless...we need to keep watch on these new pups. The Fairy fang leader stated. Especially if they decide to band together against the
