Dark Glitters - James Aa. Keister
Chapter One
Dark and deep the watery depths,
Finding not but wails.
Swirling clouds of sediment stir,
Floating in death's sails.
Not one ship stirred, not a boat moved as they lay like old ghosts against the seaweed floor of the last lake they swam in. Nothing stirred, not even the light mud that painted the bottom of this gray and bleak watery grave. While above, at the surface, the sun glistened off the rippling waves, sending sharp beaming rays of spectral light deep into the liquid pool. Far beneath the surface...afraid to rise only because of what the sun could do...they waited for the bright ball of fire to fall and for the large pearly moon to rise. That's when they could come to the surface...to eat...to play...to watch for the return of their own kind. Those from the stars that filled the night skies. But for now...they had hidden themselves away from the beaming sunlight. Hidden deep inside their little caves and subterranean chasms far below the meal storm that meandered the surface world.
Down here in their own little macrocosm they marbled with a medley of muss. Now diluted of strength and numbers, they had to depict a new substructure of being. They were fragmented into smaller groups...spread thin across the waters of these lands. Their charismatic charms now at the brink of failure, they had to turn to other means of witchery. To torsion a way to conquer that which they had first set out to defeat. Earth.
Eyes watch as one of their own comes slithering up out of the water and clawed it's way up onto the muddy bank. It's webbed claws gripping hold of the stalagmite pillars that crowded the floor of their underwater coliseum. Above them hung stalactites of dripping water, falling in tiny droplets that splatter with desolate results upon the floor. The creature moves silently up to it's place among the others. Not one made a sound other than the wet suckle sounds of webbed paws slurring in mud. They all could feel the tempest of some sort of superficial malice of mutated change. An atmosphere of swoon riptides. A vortex of meaningless sequester. Transfixed with the thoughts of dying upon this forsaken planet. They wanted only to lacerate themselves from it. Praying that help would come before their utopia slipped to an end.
Chapter Two
They were out at a local park his father had found...playing on the swings and bars they could climb on. He watched over his little sister just as his blue butterfly watched over him. He never let her out of his sight, even though there were twenty other children playing around them. He was not the oldest child in the park, but to him, he was the smartest. Yet he was still a child and needed his playtime just as well. So he laughed and danced with little Sirrah as they raced over to spin around on the large round flat sheet of steel that turned on it's side like a wheel. She sat holding onto a metal bar as he pushed the merry-go-round faster and faster. Sirrah was laughing and shouting for Miskka to go even faster. He could see the glee in her tiny gold eyes that sparkled with delight. Okay...hold tight!
He panted as he pushed the ride harder.
Wee!
She laughed in excited fun. Miskka gave one last hard push as he jumped onto the spinning wheel and rode the ride himself. Laughing and smiling at his little sister. Above them, floating in fluttering waves, was Miskka's blue insect. It never strayed too far away. Even in a down pour of rain...it was near him. No one knew what the bug was for or why it followed him. Even his own mother was clueless of it's purpose. But there was one person who knew...Miskka. When the ride slowed, Miskka jumped back off to push the ride again.
Go nis fasser Misky! Fasser!
Sirrah smiled.
Okay! But you better hold on tighter. I'm gonna go the other way.
He said as he watched her grip the bar tighter as he brought the ride to a stop and began to push it the other way. Faster and faster it went as he pushed hard then jumped on and wrapped his arms around Sirrah to assure she would not fall off. They laughed and laughed until the ride came to a stop.
Wit nex Misky? We nin na swingy?
Do you want to swing or climb on the bars?
Swingy.
She smiled as he took her hand and lead her off to the swings. They had to wait for some of the other kids to finish so he could help her up into the swing seat. And once she had a good grip on the two rusted chains that hung on either side of her, he began to push her so she could swing back and forth. Again he watched her enjoy herself, listening to her laugh as they played. But then above him, he could hear the long rumble of thunder. He looked up at the darkening skies. Sirrah, we have to be going. There's a storm coming.
He pointed up at the sky as he slowed and stopped her from her swinging. Sirrah looked up.
But nis no rainy out.
She pouted.
It's gonna be in a couple minutes.
He told her as he took her hand. Then as they walked through the park, Miskka warned the other children about the coming storm. Some took heed, some stayed to play. As for him and Sirrah...they made their way back home. Back home where waiting arms gave warm hugs and made warm food for two hungry tummies.
Chapter Three
Open up!
He called from below the two iron clad doors that stood some twenty feet above him. A moment later a face appeared from above the doors and shouted down. What's the pass word?
Ice cream!
the man shouted back up. It was a word they knew no wolf would know or remember and it was changed daily. The man above the door disappeared briefly as the creaking sounds of clanking chains began to cry out in labored tones. One of the huge doors swung slowly open. But only enough to let the few humans that stood outside pass through. The staggered crowd shuffled in past two dogs that were chained within reach of the doors. The dogs were used to check each person that came into the city. If the dogs began to growl and bark...the men knew that person was not human and must be a lycan. The lycans were not allowed within the Human city ever since the mass disappearance of humans some ten or fifteen years ago. Back when the Fathom fangs were kidnapping as many humans and wolves as they could to turn them into more Fathom fangs. But since the eclipsing of the moon and sun, that had happened only
