    Chapter 1

Cold and damp and gray like the wall he stood against. Lost beneath the shadows of a lightless street. Wondering if this batch of crystal meth was going to be as good as the last. Only having smoked some not more than a few minutes ago. He could feel the sting of its buzz effect sinking in.

Taking another drag off his cigarette, he stood watching the light rain mist down as a fog began to creep in. Darkening the already lifelessness of the night.

Here all the street lamps had been busted out, leaving the streets bleak and gray with roaming haloed shadows that hid all the ugliness of this city.

Stop... Stop. He heard. As he watches a man run past on the opposite side of the street. Mikey steps back into the shadows he knew stood just behind him. He disappears from the light, but was able to watch the whole event as it unfolded.

Stop... Stop. He heard again as two cops dressed in light gray uniforms run past. Mikey looked back at the man they were chasing as he rounded the corner of a building. Far ahead enough of the cops to clearly be able to escape.

Mikey hears a clatter, then sees a flash of metallic glitter, as the piece of steel hits the ground, slides briefly on the damp concrete sidewalk and then disappears into the surrounding shadows.

Turning his attention back to the cops as they race past him. Followed by two men dressed in all black suits, white shirts, and black ties. Listening to their hard sole shoes thump against the wet ground.

He watched them as they rounded another corner of the same building. None had stopped or even paused where Mikey saw the man throw the metallic thing. He listened to them as they descended down the alley. Mikey looked back up the street from whence they came, saw no one else. He looked back at that corner.

He counted to ten in his head. Then he bolted out of his shadow, across the street, and down toward the corner where he heard and saw the item fall.

Splashing through the puddles of rain as they explode under his feet to give way to his running.

Getting closer, he could see it glitter slightly in the mist of things. Lying up against the wall of an unoccupied abandoned store.

With his left arm and hand both extended out to stop his momentum against the wall and help push off it once he had. He reached down into the shadow with his other hand and scooped up the metal piece. Shoving it into his pocket as quick as possible. He sprang from the wall and leapt over a puddle as he jetted back into the shadows he had first come from.

Running up the alley he had been standing in. Heading off in the opposite direction from that of the cops. It took him some ten minutes to make his way back to the abandoned building that he used as his safe haven.

Crouching in through a hole in the fence that surrounded the building. He pushed the fence back into place to make it appear as if it were still attached.

Following the building wall down past two boarded up doors to a broken out sub floor window that had been boarded up. He removed the piece of plywood that covered it. Squeezed in and through the broken glass that crunched under his feet as he paced quickly over toward a staircase. After he had replaced the wood up against the window.

Up six flights of steps and three floors he rounded a corner, pushed open the stairway door. Went down a hall where he found his room. 420. He pulled the key out from under his shirt where it hung on a heavy chain around his neck. Slipping the key into the lock, turning it and he heard it click as it opened.

Mikey found the key a long time ago out in the buildings parking lot. He then found the room and took the time to reinforce the doors, walls and any other way anyone might try and break in. Here, he made this place his safe haven of refuge. He turned and bolted the door shut.

Walked over to a hole in the wall where the dry wall had been knocked out. Reached in and pulled out his bag of stash. Prodded over to the mattress that lay on the dirty floor and plopped down on it.

Unrolled the baggy, pulled out his bowl, sparked it up and drew deep the smoke that it excruciated.

"This is good meth.' He thought. Taking in another hit. As darkness sank in around him like lead in an ocean. Dark, deep and cold.

    Chapter 2

His mind left him lying there. But no dreams came. Only light. Bright and annoying. Flashing in his face as he tried to push it away. Hurting his eyes, his head, as if someone was smashing it into his brain with a hammer.

He fought through the pain. Fought against the light that would not leave him.

‘Damn it hurts.' He thought. Blinking his eyes open and trying to focus. Realizing that the light came from the sun shining through the cracks of broken windows.

Mikey rolled to his side, pushed himself up into a sitting position. Looked around the room and grunted. He pulled himself up to his feet, staggering off the mattress. He heard something fall and clatter to the floor at his feet. Looking down, he had remembered the thing he had found in the shadows that some guy had thrown. Wondering if the guy ever got caught.

He let out a breath, bent down and picked up the metallic looking toy gun. At first it was cold and damp like any other piece of steel. He flipped it over and gripped it like a gun. And as he did, it sent a burning shock through his hand, up through his arm into his brain. And
