    CHAPTER ONE

    IT’S IN THE BODY

Kellie is the girl you see in the gym who looks like she belongs on the cover of a health and fitness magazine. She’s got great legs, toned arms, a flat stomach and none of those pesky ‘problem’ areas anywhere. Despite the grunts and groans of the steroid-fueled muscle men around her, Kellie moves through the gym looking confident and totally at ease. She uses the work-out machines that look like giant medieval instruments of torture, and tosses smallish looking weights around with nothing less than finesse. Kellie, like the really annoying beautiful people that you see on all those television infomercials, causes our collective selves to sigh inwardly and wish that we were even close to looking like that. Kellie is a skinny chick. Not skin and bones skinny: I just mean that she’s sleek, toned, lean and disgustingly healthy. It’s not that she is doing it on purpose; it’s just that I can’t open a magazine, watch the television, or glance up at a billboard without being confronted by her ever-fit and slender body, her perfect skin, hair and teeth: skinny chick is queen! I often watch the Skinny Chicks that I meet and wonder: How on earth does she have it all together like that? Who has time? But when it comes to losing weight I think I can compete. I’ve lost weight hundreds of times, but it just keeps on finding me again. If you must know I wasn’t always this size; I’ve been gifted with all these extra pounds for my long service in the field of childbirth, deadly-boring desk jockey jobs and for the on-going consumption of a certain item of baked goods, which shall remain nameless. I am pretty sure I can get this 20, 30, well maybe 50lbs off again, if I ever figure out exactly what it takes to do that. So far I’ve had to concede that maybe exercise (or rather the lack of it) is part of my problem. In a moment of madness I joined the local gym, and I do try to work-out every week-day. But I can’t do aerobics. Oh no! Sadly I have to say that I have the coordination of a drunken elephant, so I
