As they set off, in the car, Akemi asked Frank what food was good where they were going. He understood what she meant. In Japan- as in most of the world- local specialties to sample were a pleasure of traveling. That was much less the case in the U.S. where food was almost the same everywhere. He didn't want to embarrass himself by drawing a blank. He finally said, Maybe trout. Rainbow trout. Isn't there 'Pennsylvania rainbow trout'?

Akemi responded as if she understood the English. How would he explain a fresh water fish with many-colored skin? It would sound strange. Then he said, Or isn't there also maple syrup candy?

No, he corrected himself. I guess that's somewhere else. New England?

The whole scene was a little dreamlike to Akemi. She hadn't planned to take Frank up on his invitation. She was lonely and a little bored- it was hard to tell which was which, both states felt bad- and she'd called him. She had thought he would call her and he hadn't. She explained all this plainly to him as she rode. Dance was good, but she went home alone.

Frank's main concern was that he find a good place for them to stay at their destination. He hadn't reserved a room and he guessed Akemi was used to high-quality accommodations; hotels, inns in Japan were probably clean, well looked-after. He didn't want to be embarrassed. It wasn't like him to ignore a detail like booking lodgings. He liked to prepare in advance, but that afternoon at work had been full. A Friday. He'd had a hard time just getting out of the place. They'd planned to leave Friday night. He'd had to postpone till Saturday
