Chapter 1

To JD,

What follows is drawn from my blog. It reads like a short story because one of the people involved was a dramatic, narcissistic type.

Akemi and I hadn't gotten out of town much during her first year and a half here. That wasn't a particularly easy time for either of us, and we felt we had earned a trip somewhere. We planned well in advance for a few weeks at the ocean. We saved. We were living on my salary alone then. We were frugal, squirreled money away so we could enjoy a good long vacation free of care.

We scheduled our escape for late August. I worked hard all summer. During the last few weeks, Akemi also came to the office, pitched in, helped with the Fall campaign, which provided some supplemental income.

Akemi had prepared for the trip scrupulously, with positive gusto. She went shopping, bought new summer clothes. After looking around, she'd found a swimsuit almost identical to one she'd worn in Japan, her favorite, which she had regretted leaving behind. Not a bikini. A white maillot, I think they're called, with a lot of open spaces. I was at least as delighted as her- if not more- about that purchase.

We were to depart the morning after the end of the campaign. On the last night we invited over some people from the office. In the weeks Akemi had worked there they had come to know and like her too. Some had already met her socially before the summer.

After dinner, a poker game began. We all played- except for Akemi. I think she was hoping the party would end early. There were still things to do. As we dealt the first hand, she excused herself and made busy with last minute packing for the morning. Apologizing, she moved in and out of the living room, bringing stuff from the closet there to the bedroom, where the suitcases lay open. She also gathered up some toiletries, though not all of them.
