Jo Michaels

Jo Michaels loves writing novels that make readers gasp in horror, surprise, and disbelief. While her browser search history has probably landed her on a list somewhere, she still dives into every plot with gusto, hoping "the man" will realize she's a writer and not a psychopath about to go on a rampage. Her favorite pastimes are reading, watching Investigation Discovery, and helping other authors realize their true potential through mentoring. She's penned the award-winning Pen Pals and Serial Killers series and the best-selling educational book for children, Writing Prompts for Kids, which has rocketed the kids that use it into several awards of their own. Most of Jo's books feature the places she's lived: Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia. That's given her a special amount of insight to what makes those locations tick. Her works are immersive and twisty, and she wouldn't want it any other way.

    Chapter 1 – Abigale

Abigale Fontenot thinks she is an ordinary girl. She’s five foot five inches tall, has brown hair, silvery blue eyes, and is average sized. At twelve years old, Abigale has already decided that appearance is the most important thing she can do for herself so she is very particular about her hair, fingernails, and clothing. She is very fond of dresses and skirts and keeps herself exceptionally clean – especially behind the ears.

Besides her love of dresses, Abigale also has a deep love of books and poems. Oftentimes, she will write poetry or read when she is stressed or when something is weighing heavily on her mind. Her small notebook that she carries everywhere only has a few blank pages left.

Abigale’s parents are Louise and Frank and they live at 435 Copper Place in West Bluff, Louisiana. West Bluff is an ordinary place – perfect for an ordinary girl – and it almost never makes the news. Her parents are Catholic, like most people around West Bluff, and they are very strict about attending services every Sunday morning. Abigale loves church because she gets to put on her prettiest dresses and wear her prettiest hair bows; in many ways, she is still a very little girl.

There is only one thing about West Bluff that makes it not-so-ordinary: the little old woman that lives near the end of Copper Place. She is very old but is still spry and energetic.

Abigale and her BFF, Kristy, both agree that it’s extraordinary that the woman is still able to get around as well as she does. They sometimes hide in the bushes and watch the old lady go get her mail. One day when they were spying on her, the woman turned and pointed a gnarled finger at them in their hiding spot before giving them a toothy smile and skipping back into the house. Abigale never forgot it and thoughts of that day still sends shivers up her spine.

On the day it all began, Abigale woke up and sent Kristy a text message about how excited she was to see her that morning and told
