About this ebook

Abigale Fontenot is turning thirteen. Just when she thinks her birthday couldn't possibly get any worse, a new adventure takes hold. Abigale and Emmett are whisked away to a world of fantasy where knights, dragons, and princesses are the order of the day. Abigale is kidnapped by an evil prince in a nearby kingdom, and it's up to Emmett to rescue her. But Abigale finds that escape is not the most important thing; restoring the evil prince's kindness that has been locked away in a magical book by a wicked sorceress must come first. While Emmett is trying to rescue Abigale, she is trying to free the prince from his curse. Will she succeed in her quest before the evil prince kills Emmett, or will she fail and lose her new best friend? Will death matter if the whole thing is a dream, or are the adventures real and truly dangerous?

Jo Michaels

Jo Michaels loves writing novels that make readers gasp in horror, surprise, and disbelief. While her browser search history has probably landed her on a list somewhere, she still dives into every plot with gusto, hoping "the man" will realize she's a writer and not a psychopath about to go on a rampage. Her favorite pastimes are reading, watching Investigation Discovery, and helping other authors realize their true potential through mentoring. She's penned the award-winning Pen Pals and Serial Killers series and the best-selling educational book for children, Writing Prompts for Kids, which has rocketed the kids that use it into several awards of their own. Most of Jo's books feature the places she's lived: Louisiana, Tennessee, and Georgia. That's given her a special amount of insight to what makes those locations tick. Her works are immersive and twisty, and she wouldn't want it any other way.

Chapter One – Happy Birthday Abigale

Louise’s mixer churning along in the kitchen woke Abigale from a sound sleep. She ground the sleep out of her eyes with her fists and rolled over, pulling the covers over her head. It wasn't time to get up yet! She just needed five more minutes!

Her brain went on overdrive when she closed her eyes. Why is Mom running the mixer this early in the morning? Then, it hit her: the next day was her thirteenth birthday! She knew that, and had been waiting for the day when she would finally be a teenager, but during sleep it somehow escaped her brain.

A big party was planned and she knew her friends would all be there. Her heart sped up and a huge grin appeared on her face. Finding she was too wound up to sleep, Abigale pulled herself out from under the covers and made the bed before heading to the bathroom to shower. The warm water helped her to wake up a bit, and she did love the feeling of being clean.

Hi, Mom! Abigale chirped as she entered the kitchen, clean and wearing a cute skirt she’d found hiding in the back of her closet.

Good morning, sweetheart. How did you sleep? Louise asked.

Before Abigale could respond, Frank popped his head around the corner and said, Good morning, princess! How did you sleep? Excited about tomorrow?

Abigale hopped on a stool and grinned at them both. "I slept great, thank you both for asking. I am very excited about tomorrow, Daddy."

Thoughts of pretty dresses and books she might get as gifts floated around in her head. Her book list was short but she hoped someone would get her something written by a new author. Perhaps even a new notebook for her poems; the old one was full.

Emmett came through the door in that moment and plopped himself down on the stool near Abigale. He put a large package on the counter and leaned over to peer at Louise’s mixing activities.

That sure looks good, Ms. Fontenot! he said. Strawberry?

    "Well, thank you. Yes it
